MORIAH
Episode 20 Season 14
airdate: April 25, 2019
directed by Phil Sgriccia
written by Andrew Dabb
Jack has escaped from the Ma'lak box and is upset that Sam and Dean and Cas lied to him to get him in there. He disappears and wanders the world, hearing all the lies people tell each other. He shouts "Stop lying!" and everyone in the world does stop lying, leading to rioting. Sam and Dean experience the upheaval while trying to infiltrate a facial recognition software company in order to search the world for Jack using facial recognition. Meanwhile, Cas hopes to find a way into hell to get a look at the Lucifer/Michael cage to see if perhaps that could hold Jack while they try to figure out how to restore Jack's soul. Cas is unsuccessful in this quest but is very surprised when God/Chuck appears as an answer to his prayer for help. Chuck produces a gun that can kill Jack, but, if used, will also kill the person using it. Whatever happens to the target also happens to the shooter. Dean decides he must kill Jack to stop him from causing further chaos in the world. Sam is dead set against this idea. Cas finds Jack (or, Jack finds Cas) first and realizes that Jack HAD the chance to kill another human out of frustration (as he did with Mary); this time, it was Kelly Kline's mother, but Jack chose to walk away, so Cas feels there is hope for Jack. Dean shows up with Chuck's nephilim-killing gun. Jack does not fight him, but kneels down, saying he understand if Dean must kill him, but Dean can't do it. This angers Chuck; this was not the way the story was supposed to go. Dean and Sam realize together that Chuck has been manipulating them this whole time; their whole lives, in fact. They will not do what he wants this time. Chuck steps in and kills Jack himself. We see Jack wake up in the Empty with the creature from the Empty on one side and Billie (the new "Death") on the other telling Jack "We have to talk". Back on earth, Chuck tells Sam and Dean that the story's over and they should prepare for the end. Chuck disappears, leaving them in what is now suddenly nighttime and strange things start to happen including the dead rising from the graves like zombies in the cemetery around them. We see several glimpses of other monsters; things Sam and Dean already killed long ago (the Woman in White from the pilot, the killer clown from Everybody Loves a Clown or maybe that was the recently-dispatched spirit of John Wayne Gacy, the spirit from Bloody Mary) appearing in various places leading us to believe that everything they've already killed is back; that Chuck may have just erased their deeds of all the previous years. Sam and Dean and Cas stand back-to-back in the cemetery holding makeshift weapons as the zombies close in on them.

  • The name of the facial recognition software company that Sam and Dean infiltrate is "Mirror Universe" which reverences God's other created worlds as well as what happens when Jack commands all humans to tell the truth; the opposite of order; chaos.
  • Chuck wants to play Sam and Dean a song and Dean smashes his guitar before he can; referencing Rob Benedict's real-life music career.

  • The whole thing was a big allusion to the writers of the show; how much control they have; that they lie.
  • The monsters that appear at the very end of this episode are things Sam and Dean killed in the early seasons of the show; the Woman in White from the pilot, the killer clown from Everybody Loves a Clown, and Bloody Mary.
  • "Moriah" was the location in the Bible where Abraham was supposed to sacrifice his son Issac before being stopped by God.
  • The TV reporter reporting on President Trump telling the truth for a change references his "deep ties to Russia and North Korea" which are current events.
  • When Chuck shows up with the nephilim-killing gun he created, he says he's the "deus from the machina"; a reference to the ancient Greek theater device "Deus ex machina" or "God in the Machine" where there is a rather surprising and contrived and convenient resolution to a plot issue.
  • When Chuck changes the radio channels to demonstrate to Sam and Dean that the whole world is in chaos, one of the voices on the radio says "The Purge is real" referencing a popular film series that premises that once a year, for 24 hours, anything goes and all crime is legal.
  • In the office of the facial recognition software company, Dean is seen commenting on a mommy blog he follows; a dig at Genevieve Padalecki's real-life mommy blog where everything looks perfect.
