  • The nephilim opened a rip in space and time. What other powers does he have? Can he resurrect the dead? Can he open the rip at will, and free those trapped on the other side?
  • Crowley was unhappy with his life and didn't want to be king any longer. Is it possible that he was planning his end all along?
  • In "Form and Void" (season 11) Dean stabbed Crowley through the hand with an angel blade, and it didn't restrain him. Crowley was able to free himself. Why would Dean think stabbing Crowley through the hand with the demon knife would work this time?
  • Was Castiel's vision true? Will Jack bring about a world without suffering? If so, how? And at what price?
  • Mary told Kelly that she'd die for her sons. Was she being prophetic? Is Mary going to die?
  • Where is the real Bobby? After he helped free Metatron in season 10 ("Inside Man") we assume the angels punished him somehow, but we don't know what happened to him. Will we ever find out?
  • The archangel Gabriel was killed with an angel blade. But angel blade bullets and an actual angel blade didn't kill Lucifer in this episode. Why? Is it because both of those attacks happened in the alternate-reality world, and the rules are different there? Or is it because Lucifer is stronger than Gabriel was?
  • Is Crowley truly gone for good? What about Rowena? What about Castiel?
  • If Rowena is truly dead, can anyone else return Lucifer to his cage? What will happen to the Book of the Damned? Does anyone besides Rowena even know where it is?
  • Is Jack evil, good, or something in between? With Castiel, Crowley, and Lucifer all inaccessible, how will the Winchesters deal with Jack?
  • If Crowley is truly gone, there will be a power vacuum in hell. Who will step in to take over? Lucifer? Someone we haven't met yet?
  • There is still one surviving prince of hell -- sibling to Dagon and Ramiel. Will he/she come out of seclusion and try to take over hell?
  • Mary is trapped in alternate-reality world with a very angry Lucifer, much like Sam was trapped in the cage after "Swan Song". What will Lucifer do to her?

  • At the beginning of the episode, Castiel told Kelly that he'd give his life for her son. Was he being prophetic? Is Cas truly gone?
  • In alternate-reality world, Dean and Sam were never born, so they were never able to save the world (many times). As a result, humans in alternate-reality world are trapped in a perpetual war between angels and demons. Alternate-reality Bobby hunts and kills angels (presumably because they're worse than demons??). He also knew John Winchester and Mary Campbell, but John and Mary never got married. John died 40 years ago, and Mary was killed 10 years ago by Azazel.
  • Dean and Sam finally got to see proof that the world would be a horrible place without them.
  • In alternate-reality world, Bobby used melted down angel blades to make angel-killing bullets, like Crowley did in season 8 ("The Great Escapist").
  • Crowley has become disillusioned and no longer wants to rule hell. He offered to close the gates of hell forever.
  • In Castiel's vision, he saw a world without pain, fear, and suffering. He believed that the Nephilim can bring that to the world.
  • In "The End" (Season 5) Lucifer said he didn't want to destroy the world. But in this episode, he says he wants to destroy it because he thinks he can do better.
  • Crowley's spell to close the rip and trap Lucifer on the other side didn't do either of those things. Why didn't the spell work?

  • To maintain secrecy, Jim Beaver's name did not appear as a guest star in the opening credits. Before this episode aired, Jim also implied in social media conversations that he would not be appearing in an episode of Supernatural in season 12. Besides Jensen and Jared, Jim is the only actor whose character has appeared in at least one episode of Supernatural in every season, including season 1.
  • This episode was Misha's 100th appearance in the series.
  • This episode was Mark Sheppard's 70th appearance in the series.
  • Castiel bought a truckload full of "Baby Sweetheart" diapers.
  • Castiel read 74 books on child rearing in preparation for the Nephilim's birth.
  • Castiel and Kelly were staying at a cabin in North Cove, Washington. The drive from the bunker in Lebanon, Kansas to North Cove would have taken 26 to 28 hours, assuming the Winchesters didn't stop at all to rest. That suggests that Kelly was in labor for close to 26 hours.
  • In a "meta" moment, Dean and Sam refer to their alternate-reality experience in "The French Mistake" (Season 6).
  • Bobby's gun's name is "Rufus", after his close friend and hunting partner (in this reality) Rufus Turner.
  • Kelly named her Nephilim son Jack.
  • When Lucifer is falling through the rip, he grabs Mary's arm just like Michael grabbed Sam in "Swan Song", and they fall through the rip together. The writers seem to be making a parallel between Mary's situation with Lucifer in the alternate reality universe, and Sam's experience with Lucifer and Michael in the cage.

  • The episode title "All Along the Watchtower" refers to a song of the same name by Bob Dylan.
  • Kelly is struggling to assemble a Swedish crib. This likely refers to the popular retail chain "IKEA", well known for Swedish-manufactured furniture that requires assembly after purchase.
  • In preparation for the Nephilim's birth, Castiel took an online doula class. Doulas provide information and emotional support to a pregnant woman during childbirth and the immediate postpartum period. Their role is not medical.
  • "Everyone Poops" refers to a series of 1970s era childrens' books by Taro Gomi.
  • Dean asks Castiel if he can "flame on" again (referring to the episode when Cas killed Dagon). This is an allusion to the Marvel comics superhero The Human Torch (one of the Fantastic Four), who can manipulate fire at will. The fictional character often utters "flame on" before using his power.
  • Dean asks Castiel if the alternate-reality world is like "Narnia". This is a reference to the series of seven 1950s-era children's books by C. S. Lewis titled The Chronicles of Narnia. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is likely the most well-known book from this series. Three films have also been based on books from this series.
  • Sam compares the alternate-reality world to "Bizarro world". This refers to the fictional alternate-reality world featured in several DC Comics' books.
  • Dean refers to the alternate-reality world as "Mad Max" world. This refers to the futuristic, post-apocalyptic world featured in the 1981 film "The Road Warrior", and several sequels. Mad Max was the lead character in the film series.
  • While holding an automatic weapon, Dean says "Say hello to my little friend.", which is a famous line from the 1983 gangster movie "Scarface".
