  • Crowley - "Hell's complicated."
Dean: "Game of Thrones is complicated. Shower sex - that's complicated. Hell ain't complicated."
  • Dean (to Metatron) - "You are nothing but Bernie Madoff with wings."
  • Metatron: "So I'm a fake. Do you have any idea how much pancake makeup and soft lighting it took to get God to work a rope line? He hated it. And, you know, humans sense that. So they prayed harder and longer and fought more wars in His name. And for what? So they could die of malaria? Leukaemia? And all the while, blaming themselves. 'Oh, if only I'd been more prayerful, God would have loved me! God would have saved me!' You know what? God didn't even know their name. But I do. Because I've walked among them. And I can save them."
  • Crowley to Dean – “It’s the Mark. It wants you to kill. The more you kill, the better you feel. The less you kill, the less better you feel.”
Dean to Crowley – “How much less better?”
Crowley to Dean – “One would imagine the least best better.”
Dean to Crowley – “So, dead.”

  • Gadreel and Crowley both asked “What’s that smell?” early in the episode. When Gadreel asked, Sam replied that it was sulfur. Does that mean Dean was already "turning" into a demon and was starting to smell like sulfur before he died?
  • What will happen to Dean, now? Sam knows the Men of Letters’ purified blood ritual for curing demons. Will he try to use it on Dean? Will it work? Even if Dean is cured from being a demon, what will happen to the Mark?
  • Now that Dean is a demon, is that good news for Crowley, or bad news? Does Dean having the Mark of Cain make him a more powerful demon than Crowley is?
  • How long will Castiel be okay before his stolen grace fades?
  • What will Castiel do now? Will he take charge of heaven? If not him, who?

  • Gadreel killed himself in a final act of redemption to save heaven and humanity from Metatron
  • Crowley knew that Dean’s taking on the Mark of Cain would have negative effects, but he says he didn’t know it would turn him into a demon. If Crowley is telling the truth, Cain (while he was still human) took his own life to avoid the effects of the Mark, but his death turned him into a demon
  • Castiel was forced to destroy the angel tablet
  • Metatron is in heaven’s jail
  • Apparently, the Mark of Cain forces the bearer to kill. If he doesn’t, the Mark sickens and eventually kills the bearer (which then turns the bearer into a demon)
  • Dean is a demon! Oh no!

  • Metatron makes a “meta” comment when he says that winning the People’s Choice award is not like winning a real award. People’s Choice award nominees and winners are all selected by the viewing public, not by an academy or other similar organization. Supernatural and individual cast members have won several People’s Choice awards, but because of the show’s genre, it has not been generally recognized by other entities
  • Metatron comments that lowly people live in Brentwood, California. Jensen lived in Brentwood when this episode was written, so this may have been another "meta" comment from Metatron

  • When Dean is locked up, he refuses to “ride the pine”, a sports term for sitting on the bench instead of participating in the game
  • Metatron's assistant mentions the 1994 Nicholas Sparks book The Notebook, which was also adapted for film in 2004. The story deals with a working-class young man who falls in love with a girl from a wealthy family
  • Metatron alludes to Lou Gherig, a famous baseball player whose retirement speech, given at a stadium, was blemished by microphone feedback
  • Crowley implies that he has Dr. Phil on speed dial. Dr. Phil (Philip McGraw) is a popular television therapist
  • Dean says ”Game of Thrones” is complicated, referring to the popular drama/fantasy television series (2011 - present)
  • Crowley says hell is running "like a Swiss watch", which is known for keeping time very accurately
  • Castiel says “Wookie” to describe a plan in which he allows himself to be led into heaven as Gadreel’s prisoner. In the 1977 Star Wars film, the Wookie Chewbacca uses the same trick to get inside of an enemy base
  • Dean accuses Metatron of being Bernie Madoff with wings, referring to the infamous white-collar criminal whose elaborate Ponzi scheme led to a 2009 conviction and a sentence of 150 years in prison
  • Dean is correct. The Chicago Cubs have not won a world series since 1908
  • Metatron calls Gadreel and Castiel “Humpty and Dumpty”, alluding to a fictional character from the Mother Goose nursery rhyme, Humpty Dumpty
  • Metatron refers to heaven’s jail as his version of “Locked Up Abroad”, alluding to the popular documentary series (2006 - present) about people who get arrested and forced to serve prison time in foreign countries
