| - Gadreel (to Dean) - "I’ve been in your brother’s body, Dean. He would not trade his life for yours. He told you that he’s always felt that way. That he thinks that you are just a scared little boy who’s afraid to be on his own because daddy never loved him enough.
- Gadreel (to Dean) - "He is right, isn’t he? Right to think that you are a coward. A sad, clingy, needy, pathetic bottom-feeder who cannot even take care of himself. Who would rather drag everyone through the mud than be alone. Who would let everyone around him die.”
- Metatron - "What makes a story work? Is it the plot, the characters, the text? The subtext? And who gives a story meaning? Is it the writer? Or you?”
- Cas (to Dean and Sam) - "Honor bar. What’s honorable about a miniature bar in a motel room?”
- Gabriel (to Cas) - "I got hurt in the Fall too. Used most of my juice to get back into porn. That came out wrong. So did that.”
- Dean (to Sam about Gadreel) - "We’re not at this five minutes and you’re already going Liam Neeson on his ass.”

- In literature, meta fiction is a device in which the characters in a story "break the fourth wall" by letting the audience or viewers know that they're aware they're in a story
- Gabriel's Horn appears to be a sigil that draws angels to it's sound. The ingredients for the sigil include the feathers of a griffin and the bones of a fairy.
- Robbie Thompson, who wrote this episode, commented that he chose the name for Hannah's character just so he could make the joke about the 1986 film "Hannah and Her Sisters"
- Gadreel’s car has Colorado license plate number 971-Q4S
- Gabriel contacted Castiel by emerging from the Casa Erotica #14 porno film. Casa Erotica has been mentioned many times in Supernatural as Dean's preferred porn movie collection. Castiel used an earlier Casa Erotica film to contact the Winchesters in Hammer of the Gods (season 5)
- Castiel was staying at the Cedar Lodge motel in Bishop Falls, Utah. Bishop Falls appears to be a fictional place, as there is no such place in Utah.

- Dean: "We're not into this five minutes, you're already going Liam Neeson on his ass." This references the 2009 movie "Taken", where Liam Neeson plays Bryan Mills, a former U.S. black ops agent who travels to Europe when his daughter is kidnapped. He uses his skills to recover her and take revenge on her abductors.
- When Gadreel asks the shopkeeper for unusual ingredients, the man comments that his store isn't "Daigon Alley", referring to the shopping venue from the Harry Potter books and films
- Gabriel jokes with Castiel about getting into Mensa, an elite organization for highly intelligent people
- Gabriel jokingly calls Castiel "Columbo", referring to the fictional television detective from the series (1971 - 2003) of the same name
- When Gabriel discusses the angels falling, he says "raining men, hallelujah", referring to the 1983 song "It's Raining Men" by The Weather Girls
- Gabriel tells Castiel that he "and the other two stooges" ruined Christmas, referring to the comedy team The Three Stooges
- Metatron mentions a quote ("The universe is made of stories, not atoms") from the 1968 poem by poet, author and political activist Muriel Rukeyser titled Speed of Darkness
- Metatron mentions "Hannah and Her Sisters", alluding to the 1986 comedy/drama
- Dean: "We got to find Gadreel before he lights up the Bat-Signal." This references the spotlight given by Batman to the police of Gotham City to summon him when necessary. It first appeared in Detective Comics #60 in February 1942.
- Gabriel: "We're rebels. One without a cause, one with." This references the 1955 film "Rebel Without a Cause", which made James Dean the idol of disaffected youth everywhere. Dean plays Jim Stark, a California teenager who rebels against his parents and authority figures in general.
- When Dean talks about finding Metatron’s stairway to heaven, Sam jokes that it will be like “sneaking into the Death Star and killing the Emperor”. This alludes to the popular Star Wars film series
