Lucifer has arrived, and the Winchesters need to figure out what to do next. Both the demons and the angels seem to be hunting the boys (especially Dean, who is now supposed to stop Lucifer), and relationships are strained for Sam as the one who broke the final seal.

Though Chuck reports that the archangel "blew up" Castiel, Cas appears briefly to help Dean and Sam. Bobby proves amazingly strong in resisting a demon possession, saving Dean's life and thwarting Meg in her new guise.

Lucifer courts his vessel, who must agree to allow him in...and does. Can Dean overcome his distrust of Sam so they can work fully work together again?

This is nearly identical to Brandon (Justin Long) in the movie Galaxy Quest finding out the ship and its outer space quest are real.

When Zachariah says to Dean, "It's apocalypse now," this is a reference to Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 film Apocalypse Now, based on Joseph Conrad's novella, Heart of Darkness.
