What's your take on Gadreel?
Maybe it’s just me, but Gadreel seems like one of the most enigmatic characters I’ve met on the show. I honestly think he wasn’t a bad guy in the beginning. I think he started out with honorable intentions, but went off the rails somewhere along the way in season 9 – possibly BEFORE meeting Metatron, which of course just sent everything right down the crapper.
Here are my big questions:
If Gadreel really WAS trying to hide from all the angels, it made more sense for him to remain in his original vessel than to agree to inhabit Sam Winchester (who, with his brother, was a target for so many angels). That makes me think that in the very beginning of season 9, despite the fact that he lied about his name, he really did answer Dean’s call because he wanted to help. If that’s the case, when did he decide to overstay his welcome? Was he “lingering” in Sam’s vessel on purpose? If so, why? Or was it really taking THAT long to heal Sam, because so much damage had been done by the trials?
I get why he saved Sam so many times (he could simply have been protecting his vessel), but he didn’t have to resurrect Cas or Charlie. I think he did those things to be helpful, but he could also have been just trying to earn Dean’s trust for other reasons. In "Devil May Care", when he told Dean that he was "one of the good guys", did he believe it at the time, or was that a deception, too?
I lean toward believing that Gadreel didn’t mean any harm at first; he didn’t actually start to hurt people until Metatron started manipulating him and making him kill people. However, I understand that some other viewers have a different take on him.
What do you guys think?
