Sam and Dean are called to the scene of an apparent suicide by a very old friend from their childhood, only to find the monster they thought they put to rest as children has returned, and the suicide is not what it appears.

- Young Dean: Sam, about the college thing, I don't know, but, we do make a good team, right? Young Sam: Yeah, we do.
- DEAN: Not to make light of the Death Star level galactic genocide, but what else is new?
- Dean: This is how we end Chuck, okay?! This is the only way we'll ever be free! So I'm sorry, Sam! You don't get a choice! We don't get a choice!

- Did Dean call Sam dumb out of fear of Sam leaving him in favor of college someday? (Some fans saw that as out of character and rather harsh.)
- Will Dean EVER learn not to keep secrets from Sam?
- How did Caitlyn contact them with such an ancient phone number if they'd had no contact with in 25 years...I guess they still keep John's phone charged up?

- Dean has always been cool and street-smart and brave.
- Sam has always been book smart and reassuring to the people they are helping.
- Sam was thinking about attending college from a very early age.
- Dean has always tried to protect others from the horrors of their lives (when he saw the bodies of the dead children when he himself was a child).
- Dean is not immune to trauma. Seeing the bodies of the dead children gave him nightmares for years.
- Supernatural can still give us actual scary monsters.
- Dean always looks to Sam after a close call; after adult Dean smashed the ring of the Baba Yaga, he looked over to Sam, after having seen the apparition of young Sam's dead body, just to make sure he was there and okay.
- Sam actually has the ability to REALLY get angry and it was a beautiful thing to finally see.

- This episode is set two years after Sam learned the truth about monsters in "A Very Supernatural Christmas"

- When young Caitlin sees John drive up in the Impala, she asks if Sam and Dean's dad is Knight Rider; a reference to the 80's TV show.
- When Sam figures out that it's the ring that gives the Baba Yaga power, Dean surmises that they just have to track her down, destroy "her 'Precious' " and it'll be over. "Precious" being a reference to the ring in Lord of the Rings.
- The names of the missing children are names of Supernatural crew members.
