Lucifer
In pagan lore, Satan-Sataniel is said to have been one of the archangels. When God created the man and set Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, Satan rebelled. He was cast down because re refused to bow to this new creation and wanted instead to be exalted above them, placing himself closer to the level of God Himself. For his blasphemy, hubris, and disobedience, he was hurled out of heaven, with his host of angels, to forever circle above the abyss. (Some modern theologians and exorcists believe that Lucifer and Satan are two different beings...but that's another story.) The New Testament and its contemporary lore crafted Lucifer into the feared and reviled creature we know today. He is said to have tempted Eve and thus ruined Eden for all mankind (but, of course, the lore of Supernatural also includes the demonizing of Lilith, the first woman...Eve's predecessor; and some lore holds that Lilith then tempted Eve) and brought death itself into the world. Since then, he is blamed for all of man's baser instincts, lies, immorality, and temptations.

The article on Lucifer (by SuperZu) says "In pagan lore, Satan..." which is totally wrong.
Satan does not appear in Pagan lore - only Christian Mythology deals with Satan. Belial and Mephistopheles are names of older underworld gods linked to Satan by the Church, but they are not the same. Of course, Supernatural never does Pagan lore any justice at all - painting all Pagan Gods as little more than man-eating monsters. .... love the show any way. :)

That he plays Jacob in Lost, (who's the good guy and basically is like God on the island) and he plays the devil in Supernatural :D
