TEASER:
The scene opens in the bunker’s war room. Dean, Sam, Castiel, Mary, and Jack are all sitting around the table chatting amiably, joking, laughing, eating pizza, and drinking beer. Mary starts collecting plates to wash dishes, and Sam gets up to help her. They talk briefly on their way to the kitchen. Sam asks Mary how things were “over there” in the alternate universe (AU) and Mary says it was difficult, but that she always knew he and Dean would come for her. As they’re talking, Sam can hear his alarm clock going off, and he realizes he’s dreaming. He wakes up and shuts off the alarm clock.
Later, Dean and Sam are in the library with Rowena, Castiel and Gabriel. As the Winchesters assemble and check their weapons, Rowena reminds them that their plan is risky because the rift will only remain open for 24 hours, which may not be enough time to find Mary and Jack and make it back. Dean and Sam insist that it’s the only plan they have, so they’re going through with it.
As Rowena prepares and mixes the ingredients to open the rift, the group is concerned that the miniscule amount of archangel grace Gabriel has provided will be inadequate. Gabriel assures the rest of the group that his grace will be enough, so Rowena performs the spell, the rift opens, and everyone else prepares to cross over.
In the bunker’s kitchen, Dean, Sam and Castiel discuss Cas’ plan to find Lucifer and use his grace to open the rift. They all hate the idea – especially Sam, but Castiel reminds Sam that Lucifer is the obvious choice, but they’re afraid to deal with him. He also reminds Sam that they let Lucifer out of the cage, so it’s up to them to find him and deal with him. Eventually, Sam relents and they decide that they have no choice. Sam also comes up with a way to give them longer than 24 hours in the AU.
Meanwhile, Rowena and Gabriel are alone in the library. Gabriel is initially defensive about the “size” of his contribution to the spell, but Rowena isn’t interested in his excuses. Eventually, they realize that they’re attracted to each other and they have sex behind a book case.
Later, Dean, Sam and Castiel rush to the library to tell Rowena and Gabriel about their idea. They “surprise” the couple, and awkwardly update them on their plan.
Elsewhere and sometime later, Lucifer is depressed and drinking alone at a bar. He complains to the bartender about how much he hates his life, and how nothing matters except for his son, who is now lost to him. The bartender consoles Lucifer by saying he’s sure that “Jack” will come around and things will work out. Lucifer suddenly realizes that he never told the bartender Jack’s name. Realizing something is off, Lucifer orders the bartender to identify himself.
Lucifer stands up to confront the bartender, but suddenly realizes that he’s having difficulty standing. The bartender reveals that he drugged Lucifer’s bottle of alcohol with a mystical concoction powerful enough to bring down an archangel. As this is happening, we see the bartender morph into Gabriel.
Lucifer is shocked to see his brother alive, and tries to run, but Gabriel alters reality so the door leading out of the bar simply leads Lucifer back inside. When Lucifer demands to know what he was drugged with, Rowena enters the room and tells Lucifer that she’s the one who prepared the drug. Lucifer is surprised to see yet another person that he killed, but before he can do anything, Rowena recites an incantation that mystically binds his hands behind him. With the devil incapacitated, Gabriel approaches him with an archangel blade and Lucifer seems ready to die, lamenting that he has nothing left to live for, anyway. Ignoring Lucifer’s words, Gabriel knocks his brother unconscious.
Lucifer wakes up on his knees in the bunker’s library, with his hands still mystically bound behind him. The rest of the group – Dean, Sam, Gabriel, and Rowena are all assembled. Rowena prepares the spell ingredients and places the bowl on the floor in front of Lucifer. As Castiel cuts Lucifer under his chin to release his grace, the team explains their plan: they realized that by slowly “bleeding” Lucifer of his grace, they can keep the rift open for much longer than 24 hours, which gives them more time to find Mary.
DEAN, SAM, CASTIEL, and GABRIEL:
Dean, Sam, Cas and Gabriel cross over, but they don’t land in the same place Dean and Ketch landed the last time they entered the AU. There’s no snow this time, and they seem to be in the middle of the woods. They quickly get their bearings –Dean reminds the group that AU Charlie told him that Mary and Jack have a rebel outpost in Dayton, Ohio. Castiel can tell that they landed in northeastern Kentucky, so they begin the two-day walk to Dayton.
Along the road to Dayton, Castiel and Gabriel talk as they’re walking. Cas updates Gabriel on the situation in heaven and tries to convince him that he can do some good and possibly even save heaven. Gabriel replies that he feels like a screwup and believes he’s the last thing heaven needs – even if they did want him back.
Suddenly, the group hears screams coming from the nearby woods. Gabriel tells Dean and Sam that whatever is happening isn’t their problem, but the Winchesters ignore him and rush toward the screams. They find two humans, Maggie and Floyd, who are being attacked by a vampire. Sam kills the vampire, but the creature doesn’t look or behave like the vampires the Boys are used to. As the group introduces themselves, Floyd explains that when Michael and the angels started exterminating humanity, they eliminated the vampires’ food source. The vampires, driven wild by starvation, have become ravenous, unthinking monsters.
As the group continues talking, Maggie learns that The Winchesters are heading north to the Mary and Jack’s rebel outpost in Dayton. Maggie admits that she and Floyd were also headed that way, but they had to turn back in the Morehead tunnel. There were initially nine people in their group, but they ran into a nest of vampires, so only she and Floyd survived. When Dean and Sam learn that the tunnel is the fastest way to Dayton, they convince Floyd and Maggie to join them, saying they’ll get them safely through the tunnel and to Dayton.
ROWENA and LUCIFER:
As Lucifer slowly bleeds grace into the bowl, he verbally taunts Rowena to fluster/anger her and hopefully break the spell, but it doesn’t work at first, so he starts singing very loudly to be obnoxious.
When singing loudly doesn’t work, Lucifer goes back to verbal taunting. He reminds Rowena of the time he surprised her in her hotel room, strangled her, and set her on fire. Enraged, Rowena fires back at Lucifer, telling him that Dean, Sam, and Castiel will be reunited in the AU with Jack, who is on the other side. She tells Lucifer that Jack considers Castiel and the Winchesters his fathers, and he means nothing to his own son – or anyone else.
Furious, Lucifer breaks his magical bonds and grabs Rowena by the throat, pinning her to a wall. He heals the wound under his neck, and tells Rowena that he’d given up on living because he didn’t think he’d ever find Jack, but now that he knows Jack is in the AU, he has a reason to live. Lucifer prepares to kill Rowena, but she utters an incantation that blasts him away from her. Unfortunately, he flies into the rift and disappears. Rowena is stunned by what she’s done.
Sometime later, we see Rowena packing up the Grimoire and her other belongings and preparing to leave. She tells herself that she didn’t expect things to work out this way, but it isn’t her fault that the rift will close and trap everyone on the other side. As she’s talking to herself, she admits that she’s probably the only person who can figure a way to keep the rift open and get everyone back. She prepares to leave, but stops. She has had a change of heart. Seemingly annoyed that she can’t simply leave like she wants to, she sits down, opens her magic book, and begins looking for a way to keep the rift open without adding any more archangel grace.
DEAN, SAM, CASTIEL, and GABRIEL:
The group arrives at the tunnel, draws their weapons, and enters the dark passage. Using flashlights, they slowly make their way through the narrow tunnel, which looks like an abandoned mine. They find the dead bodies of some of the people who died recently. They also encounter a few vampires, but are able to fight them off. However, when a larger group of vampires attacks the group, Floyd is killed and Dean watches in horror as two vampires rip Sam’s throat out and drag him away into a side tunnel. Castiel rushes into the side tunnel after Sam, while Dean fights and kills the vampires that are attacking him and Maggie at the same time.
Castiel soon emerges from the side tunnel and tells Dean that Sam is gone and they have to keep moving. At first, Dean refuses to leave and tries to go down the side tunnel after Sam, but Castiel restrains him and is able to convince him that they can’t save Sam and they need to keep moving.
Sometime later, they arrive at the perimeter of the outpost. Castiel can’t enter initially, because of the angel warding, so Gabriel erases it. As this is happening, human sentries arrive and confront the group. After a tense but brief standoff, Mary emerges and reunites with Dean, who can’t even verbally reply when Mary asks him where Sam is.
SAM:
Back in the tunnel, we see Sam’s lifeless body lying on the ground – until he suddenly takes a deep breath and wakes up. Shocked to be alive, Sam jumps to his feet, checking his neck for the wound that is no longer there. As he turns around in the tunnel to get his bearings, he is further shocked to greeted by Lucifer.
During a contentious discussion, Lucifer tells Sam that he is the one who resurrected him. Lucifer says that once he arrived in the AU, courtesy of Rowena’s mishap, he started tracking their group. He killed several of Michael’s angels along the way and ate their grace, which is why he had enough grace and power to resurrect Sam. Lucifer also tells Sam that he is currently using his powers to hold back a nest of vampires.
Lucifer goes on to say that he wants to meet his son, and he wants Sam to take him to the boy. He also wants Sam to help him develop a relationship with Jack, and he reminds Sam that they will need his help to battle AU Michael. He warns Sam that, with a snap of his fingers, he can release the vampires, who will flood into the tunnel, rip Sam apart and kill him again. Lucifer tells Sam that he will find a way to get to Jack whether Sam comes with him and lives or refuses and dies.
With only seconds to decide what to do, Sam makes his terrible choice.
AT THE OUTPOST:
As Jack is talking to Castiel and Gabriel, he is very angry that neither of them tried to resurrect Sam. Gabriel says that he isn’t strong enough, and Cas tries to convince Jack that there was nothing he or anyone else could have done.
Nearby, Mary and Dean are talking. Dean hastily checks his weapons and tells Mary that he’s going back to the tunnel to bring back Sam’s body. But before he can get any further, the encampment’s warning bells are sounded. To everyone’s amazement, Sam staggers tiredly into camp – bloody and exhausted, but somehow alive.
Before anyone has a chance to say anything, Lucifer walks into camp behind Sam and greets Jack.
