This episode opens at Guidry’s Cajun Café, Carencro, Louisiana.

Benny (the vampire who was Dean’s friend and ally in Purgatory) is known as Roy here and he’s working in the cafe. Elizabeth, who’s in charge, gives him some instructions on what he has to do as she’s leaving him to work and close up on his own. He seems happy and appears friendly with her. A customer at the counter asks Benny if he has any interest in her because he wants to ask her out. Benny says she’s like a little sister to him so he’s not interested but he doesn’t mind if the other guy tries. Someone else sitting in a booth wants serving and Benny goes over to serve him coffee. The man is Martin Creaser, The Boys’ friend from ‘Sam, Interrupted’ (Season 5, episode 11). He looks suspiciously at Benny…

Later, Benny has locked up and is leaving the café. Something seems to alert him and he heads off. Martin is following him; then we see Benny walking through woods. He hears a noise and goes off to investigate… The scene switches back to Martin, who is still in pursuit; he hears a scream and draws a knife. He goes off the track to investigate and he trips over the body of the customer who was talking to Benny earlier – his throat has been slashed open…

The scene changes to Dean carrying food and drinks back to the Impala. Sam is taking a call from someone and he finishes it when Dean has got into the car. He tells Dean there’s a vamp kill in Carencro, Louisiana and they need to go. Dean looks pleased as he wants to eat some Étouffée (a Cajun / Creole dish) but he’s less than enthused when Sam tells him Martin provided the information. Dean’s surprised that Sam is listening to ‘crazy Martin’ as he calls him because Martin was in Glendale Springs psychiatric hospital having treatment for some sort of breakdown when they last saw him about three years ago. Sam tells him Martin’s been discharged from hospital now and he was looking for some hunting job so he asked him to follow Benny. Dean’s not happy but when he finds out that Martin is saying Benny’s responsible for the kill he says they should check it out so they drive off to Louisiana…

The Boys go to see Martin in his hotel room. He tells them he’s been following Benny for a week and he’s working at the local gumbo shack. He says Benny’s been clean until last night but he’s called Roy here. Martin looks really strung out and Dean asks him if he’s running on a full charge. Martin tries to make a joke, saying “ah, a little shock therapy in the morning and I'm good to go!" but it makes him sound even more unbalanced. Martin’s convinced that Benny killed the old man he was talking to in the café but he didn’t actually see the kill and Dean says he’s not signing up for a witch-hunt until he knows it really was Benny. He says he owes Benny more than that and he asks Sam for a couple of hours to investigate. Sam agrees but Martin is beside himself and wants to go and find and kill Benny as soon as Dean has left but Sam says they will give Dean the time he needs. Martin asks Sam how long he’s going to let Dean go on like this as it’s staring him in the face, but he replies that it’s not always possible to see things for what they are, which leads into one of his flashbacks…

… Sam is sitting on the porch outside his and Amelia’s house in Kermit, Texas, playing fetch with his dog. Amelia comes outside and sits with him and Sam tells her he doesn’t want to give up what they have, even though Don’s her husband, and she tells him she doesn’t want to either. She asks him if she can take a few days to clear her head and he agrees…

The scene changes to Dean walking into the café where Benny works. He speaks to Elizabeth and finds out that Benny has gone fishing at Mill Creek for a few days. He writes down his cell number and asks Elizabeth to get Benny to call him; he also suggests she could maybe call him herself if she sees Benny before he does? He leaves the cafe and tries to call Benny but it goes straight to answerphone; he leaves a message telling Benny he has a body with two holes in it and he knows Benny has gone fishing… Benny sees he has a new voicemail message but then the view switches to him looking down at another victim lying on the ground with a slashed neck …

…Benny is digging a hole for the latest victim and he is washing his hands in a water barrel when Dean comes up behind him. He says, “wasn’t me, Dean” and Dean asks him which ‘me’ he means – Benny or Roy? Benny says he was just trying to blend in and Dean asks him who Benny has just buried. He tells him it’s victim #2 and he tells Dean that he didn’t answer the phone to him because he didn’t want to get Dean involved. He asks Dean if he wants to safety the machete which Dean is holding behind his back so they can talk and Dean agrees, bringing the machete into full view and holding it so it is no threat to his friend…

Benny tells him there’s a rogue vampire, called Desmond, who came into the café a couple of nights ago. He tells Dean that Desmond remembers him from the old days and he wants him to join the nest he’s putting together, to give him some credibility. Benny says to Dean that he told him “no” but he won’t take no for an answer and he’s killing people until Benny agrees to join him, but he goes on to say he’s not going to be turned out of his own home town by an amateur, not again. Dean asks him if he grew up here and Benny says he did and that since Andrea is gone and Dean is hunting he thought he’d come back home because only Andrea and Dean have been keeping him on the straight and narrow… He tells Dean that he’s found someone to hold himself accountable to, someone who is family. Dean guesses that he means Elizabeth and Benny says that she is his great-granddaughter. There’s a funny moment here when Dean pulls a face away from Benny’s sight and says “really” because he is attracted to Elizabeth, but Benny suspects this and asks him if he did anything, to which Dean replies “no” but he looks embarrassed… Benny tells Dean Elizabeth doesn’t know he’s her great-grandfather and he wants to keep it that way because it’s been hard walking the line (not drinking people) as he didn’t have to deal with his hunger for blood for so long in Purgatory but being with Elizabeth keeps him honest and he thinks he’s finally in control now. However Dean reminds him that he has two bodies on his hands and two hunters are after him. Benny recognized Martin as a hunter at the café and isn’t worried by him but Dean tells him he was sent by his own brother and he’s someone Benny shouldn’t mess with. Benny tells Dean that he can’t worry about the hunters now; he needs to deal with Desmond like he should have done two days ago. Dean says that the only way to do this is for him to sit on the sidelines while he convinces Sam and Martin to go after Desmond. Benny isn’t really convinced but he agrees to let Dean try…

Back at the hotel, Martin isn’t convinced – or more likely doesn’t want to be convinced – that Benny is innocent and there’s another vampire responsible for the killings; Martin’s still acting very strangely. Sam reminds Dean that they came to this place because there was a dead body and that Dean asked for more time and now there’s a second body and he asks him if they are going on trust here. Dean says “yes” but Sam isn’t convinced. He tells Dean they have killed for a lot less and he, Dean, knows how things turn out for them in situations (of trust) like this. Dean says to Sam he does know and that every relationship he’s ever had has turned to crap at some point, but Benny has never once let him down. Sam is angry as he seems to take this as another reference to his failure to look for Dean while he was in Purgatory and he tells Dean it must be great to finally find someone he can trust after all these years. Dean doesn’t seem to want another confrontation with his brother and he says to Sam that all he’s saying is that Benny is innocent but Sam doesn’t listen and he tells Dean he’s too close to this. Dean tells Sam that Benny has gone and he warns him that if he finds Benny he’ll be lucky to get out alive, while to Martin he says that if he goes with Sam, he’s a dead man. Martin finishes his drink and then he slips his hunting knife into his hand. Meanwhile, Sam asks Dean if he’s willing to risk innocent lives on Benny’s word alone and he says “damn right I am!” but as he turns around, Martin hits him hard with the haft of his knife, knocking Dean out. Sam asks Martin “what … was that?” and he says that Dean made his choice so they should finish the job. Outside the room Martin starts being aggressive again, saying he’s glad their Dad didn’t see that or he’d have taken them both out to the woodshed and maybe he’d do it instead – Sam has had enough and pushes Martin against the wall, saying he brought him into this and he could take him right out again, so he should shut up and follow his lead. Outside the hotel, Martin tries to stir things up between Dean and Sam, saying to Sam that a brother choosing a vampire over a brother, he’d know how he’d feel… Sam then has another flashback to his time with Amelia…

… He’s having a beer in a bar when someone comes up next to him. Sam recognizes him – it’s Don, Amelia’s husband, and he knows who Sam is. He tells Sam he doesn’t blame him or Amelia for what’s happened while they thought he was dead and he knows part of her loves him and part of her loves Sam now, but he says that only Amelia knows what’s best for her and he’ll respect her decision; he asks Sam to do that too. Sam agrees but looks troubled…

The scene switches back to Dean who is now conscious and trying to escape the handcuffs they’ve put on him. He escapes and calls Benny, who is somewhere in the woods, looking at a picture of him and Elizabeth together. Dean tells Benny that Sam and Martin didn’t go for it and he tells Benny to go as they are on their way to him. Benny tells Dean he isn’t frightened of Sam but Dean warns him not to underestimate his little brother, that he can and will kill Benny if he gets the opportunity. Benny asks him what they are going to do now and Dean tells him he’ll go and find Desmond. Benny says he wants to come with Dean but he tells Benny the best thing for him is to lay low, as he’s told him before… Benny says he’s coming, otherwise he won’t tell Dean where Desmond is. He tells Dean he’s told Desmond that two bodies is enough and he’s in… Benny tells Dean this is his fight and he asks him if he’s in or if he’s out…

The scene changes to Sam and Martin, who are at the place in the forest where Benny was camped. Martin says something must have spooked him. Meanwhile Sam gets a text from Amelia saying she needs his help and to “come quick” and then Martin finds the picture of Benny with Elizabeth which he must have dropped earlier. Martin then hears the car start up and Sam drives off, leaving Martin to shout out after him…

… Dean drives to meet Benny and they enter a building, some sort of warehouse. They get separated and someone comes up behind Dean – it’s Desmond! Dean turns to attack him with his machete but Desmond throws him and pins him to the floor. Dean tries to stick a syringe of dead man’s blood into him but Desmond crushes it in Dean’s hand and then he cuts Dean’s neck with his nails, leaving him temporarily helpless. He is about to sink his teeth in Dean’s neck when Benny comes up and slices Desmond’s head off. Dean tells Benny he took long enough and Benny tells him he’s lost a step, that he should lay off the junk food as he helps Dean up. Benny sees the blood staining Dean’s neck and hears his heartbeat clearly; his lips start to twitch. Dean asks him if he’s OK and Benny says he’s fine but he doesn’t look it. He walks away from Dean, leaving him looking at the blood on his hand from where he held it against the wound on his neck…

Dean goes to meet Benny outside. He asks Dean if his life here is over and Dean says, “’fraid so”. He tells Benny that once word gets out he will be hunted and he won’t be able to take them all out, and even if he could … Benny finishes the sentence for Dean, saying “we would have a problem.” Dean tells Benny that guys like them don’t get a home; they don’t get family. Benny says that Dean has Sam; he replies, “yeah” but doesn’t look convinced. He says to Benny that he has to go deep underground where nobody knows him. Benny says “yeah” but he’s got one last thing to do… Dean looks sad at seeing his friend have to leave like this.

Back to Sam who is driving to Amelia’s. He tries to call her but she’s not picking up. He has another flashback to his time with her. He’s at the house and packing his bag. Amelia comes in and asks him what he’s doing and he tells her he’s leaving. She says Don found him at the bar and he’s threatened Sam, but he says he hasn’t, that he’s just trying to do the right thing. She reminds him that only that morning the right thing was for them to be together. He tells her that he thinks she and Don deserve a chance together and she knows that, and he asks her to give Don a chance like she gave him; he says to her that she saved him…

… Benny is smiling as he looks at Elizabeth from outside the café. Dean tells him it’s time to go… They shake hands and Benny says thanks for not giving up on him, to which Dean replies, “don’t give me a reason to.” Benny drives off; then Dean leaves. He calls Martin, who is walking down a road (Sam took the car) to tell him that everything is sorted – Benny was telling the truth about the other vampire and that he and Benny killed him, together. Martin sounds spaced out – weird. Dean tells him that Benny is long gone and he won’t be coming back, ever, and for his own safety he shouldn’t try and follow him. Martin tells Dean not to worry, that he’s long gone too. Dean tells him to find some other work…

… Benny is driving along when he gets a call from Elizabeth, but it’s not her calling him; it’s Martin who answers when Benny asks her how her shift is going. Martin’s in her café eating pie. Benny asks him how he’s got Elizabeth’s phone and he hears Elizabeth talking to Martin, asking him if he reached his friend OK and Martin tells her he can’t believe he left his cell on the bus, and that he’ll just be another minute. She tells him to take his time and walks away. He tells Benny she’s a nice girl, takes kindly to strangers, and Benny tells him to leave her alone. Martin asks him how far away he is and Benny says an hour; Martin tells him to be there in 45 minutes. Martin calls Elizabeth to give her cell back but he looks insane…

Benny arrives back at the café and goes in. The place is in darkness and he sees Elizabeth sitting on a chair near the counter. As he walks slowly towards her Martin gets up from behind her chair, saying. “lay down your arms, you unholy thing” while he grips her shoulder and then puts a knife close to her neck. Benny says he’s here now so why doesn’t he let her walk away. Martin says “no” and Benny says he isn’t asking him. Martin replies he understands that but he’s not prepared to release her. Elizabeth asks Benny what’s going on and he says it’s OK, Martin isn’t going to hurt her and he asks him if that’s right. He tells Martin they have no beef with each other, but Martin says he has plenty of beef with Benny’s kind. Benny says maybe so but he didn’t kill the two people here. Martin replies that he knows – “you and Dean had a little Purgatory reunion; touching” but he’s still holding the knife to Elizabeth’s neck and he’s very twitchy. Elizabeth asks ‘Roy’ what’s going on here and he asks Martin again not to do this; that the bad guy has gone. Martin says, “she doesn’t know, Benny” and when Elizabeth asks ‘Roy’ who Benny is, Martin says “’let’s find out” and he cuts Elizabeth’s neck to provoke a vampire reaction in Benny. He points out Benny’s dilated pupils and his hunger to her. Benny turns away and his second set of fangs descends. Martin tells her, “don’t worry; he won’t feed on his own flesh and blood.” He stands up, waving his knife at Benny, who is still turned away from him and Elizabeth. He tells Benny to tell her that he’s her long-lost grand-pappy, about all the dead he’s left behind and what a monster he is. Benny’s vampire teeth have withdrawn inside his mouth and he turns around, looking defeated now that Elizabeth knows who he really is. He asks Martin what he wants and, still threatening Elizabeth with his knife, he pulls out a machete and tells Benny he wants his head on a stake…

Benny walks over towards them and slowly lays his head on the counter, facing Elizabeth. She says, “oh, Roy, no!” and she’s crying as Benny looks at her and says, “I’m sorry.”
Martin says, “well, I hope they’re saving a special place for you, wherever it is you’ve come from” and he raises his machete to strike Benny as Elizabeth shouts, “no!”

Sam arrives at Amelia’s house and he takes his gun with him when he gets out of the car. He is scoping the house when he sees Don through a window. He’s sitting on a sofa and Amelia comes in and gives him a beer and they sit down together. He has his arm around her and she’s smiling. Sam lowers his gun and watches them for a moment longer; then he goes back to his car. He sits there looking devastated for a little while, then he turns the engine on…

The scene changes to Dean, who is driving and singing along to music. He hears his phone and when he picks it up he recognizes Elizabeth’s voice saying his name. She says he asked her to let him know if she saw Roy. We see her hand holding the phone is covered in blood and her face and neck are spattered with it, then the picture zooms out to show her shirt is also blood-soaked. Dean asks if Roy is there now but she doesn’t answer; he asks her what’s going on and she just tells him to come. He heads off back to the café as fast as he can…

Dean drives up and sees Elizabeth sitting on the step outside the café. He walks up to her and she points inside the café with her bloodied phone. He holds a towel against the cut on her neck for a few moments and then he walks inside. There are puddles and splashes of blood on the floor and overturned chairs, and when he walks around the edge of the counter he sees Martin dead on the floor, surrounded by a large pool of blood. It looks like his throat has been cut…

The scene changes to Sam who is having a drink in a bar. He’s looking at the message Amelia sent him and a thought occurs to him. He dials the number that made the call and a phone goes off in Dean’s car. He finds the phone and picks it up and sees Sam is calling him. He answers it with, “Sammy” and Sam realizes Dean tricked him, swapping Amelia’s phone so Dean could send him a distress signal to get him out of the way. He’s very angry but trying to be controlled. He asks Dean when he did that and he says a while back, in case he needed it; Dean says he made the right call. He asks Sam if he saw Amelia and he tells Dean she’s doing fine, but that Dean knows that already. He tells Sam he didn’t know about Amelia but he did know it was the only way to get Sam to lay off Benny. Sam asks if it’s done and Dean says “yes”; then he asks Dean if there were any casualties and after a pause he says, “Martin” and Sam’s even more upset. He asks Dean if it was Benny and he tells Sam that Martin had it coming. Dean tries to tell Sam what happened but he says he knows and he won’t listen to Dean’s explanation. He cuts Dean off and he says, “damnit”. Sam finishes his drink and gets up to go but when he turns around he sees Amelia there in front of him.. She says, “I knew it was you” and he just stares at her, shocked…

Editor’s note:

(photos to be added shortly)
I thought this was a great episode – the ones with Dean and Benny always are as they work so well together; perhaps as well as Dean and Cas – and maybe it is also a pivotal episode in Dean’s and Sam’s relationship this season since it looks like Sam will have to confront Amelia and with his relationship with Dean at an apparently all-time low, who knows what he will choose to do next time? I though Jon Gries was excellent as well as ‘crazy Martin’ and it was good to see an old character returning in such good form, although predictably he had to die in the manner of all the Winchester friends at some time or another.
