Opening Sequence

Dean sees his Mom, Mary Winchester, still dressed in the nightgown she was wearing when she died. He tries to touch her, but she throws him to the ground. She asks him who he is and he tells her he is Dean, her son. She doesn’t believe him and says her son is four years old, but Dean replies that he was four years old when she died, and she has a flashback to when she burned...
Dean starts telling her things about him and Sam and John Winchester to get her to believe him, and she does. She says, ‘Dean’ and reaches out to hug him. Dean can’t quite believe it is happening from the look on his face…

Main episode

…A meteor hits the ground and Castiel emerges from the strike. A passing truck driver sees this and obviously thinks Cas is an alien since he tells Cas he is on Earth when he asks where he is! J There’s a nod to the episode ‘Mystery Spot’ (Season 3) in a roadside banner advertising a local Mystery Spot, which Cas crashed through before landing. Cas asks how far it is to Lebanon, Kansas – trying to get back to Sam – and takes the truck, leaving the driver unconscious.

…Dean is filling in some of the blanks for Mary, telling her how John died and how Amara – God’s Sister – brought Mary back to life but cuts it short so he can show her ‘home’.

…The scene changes again to Toni Bevell (a new character – a Woman of Letters from the London Chapter introduced in the Season 11 Finale), who gets medical attention for Sam from a veterinarian – she did shoot him in the Season 11 Finale – and Sam is tied up in the trunk, his leg bleeding. The vet fixes him up for a bagful of money.

…Next, Crowley is looking at a man who has had his eyes burned out, angel-style. Two demons come in: they have been told by Lucifer to clear the mess up. Crowley is hiding, holding an angel blade just in case…

…The scene switches to a large, apparently isolated house. Toni is talking on the phone to her son in England, saying how much she misses and loves him, while Sam is tied to a chair down in the basement! Sam is unconscious, but a woman called Ms Watt, working for Toni hits him with a cattle prod to wake him up. Toni wants information… She wants to know how they managed to save the Sun. She says she knows Sam and Dean – she knows what they have done in the past, how they almost ended the world the first time, about Lucifer, even the angels falling. Sam asks why they didn’t help and she says the ‘old men’ wouldn’t allow it but after the Darkness, they agreed things had to change. She says they are here to help but Sam scoffs, given what they have done to him. Toni is unapologetic and says Sam is a danger to himself and others but if he answers her questions he will be freed. Sam replies ‘screw you!’ and says he has been tortured by the Devil himself, so there is nothing she can do to him – she’s just ‘an accent in a pants suit’ - hilarious! 🙂 Toni nods to Ms Watt, who turns on a shower over Sam’s head. He is soaked with cold water…

…Meanwhile, Dean and Mary arrive back at the Bunker. He tells her it is a ‘Men of Letters’ house and Mary is surprised – she thinks that the Men of Letters are a myth, an old Hunter’s story. They go downstairs and see blood on the floor. Dean gives Mary a gun and goes to look around for Sam and Cas, telling his Mom to stay put. She looks around and then hears someone coming in upstairs, so she hides. She hears footsteps and steps out, getting the drop on Cas. He asks her angrily who she is and what she has done with Sam and she cocks her gun. Dean arrives just in time to prevent an accident and Cas is stunned to see him alive and well. He hugs Dean and asks about the bomb and the Darkness. Dean tells him he will explain everything later; he introduces Cas to Mary and then asks about Sam. Cas explains that a woman was waiting for them both and she blasted him away. He has no idea where Sam is now. Dean checks traffic camera footage from the time Cas was sent away and finds an SUV which ran a red light. It is the only clue they have. They all go to the garage and Mary sees Baby for the first time in thirty-three years. She loves the car almost as much as Dean, apparently, and there is a funny moment when Dean looks embarrassed as he realises the meaning of the look on his Mom’s face when she looks at the back seat. Cas isn’t sure why Dean looks like he does and Dean foreshortens any questions by saying they have to leave…

…Back to Sam, who has been under the cold water for some time and is shivering violently now. He still refuses to tell Toni anything. She asks him if he thinks he is the Hero of this story and tells him he is bad at his job – he wanders back roads and kills monsters only after they have killed people, whereas in England, her people plan ahead. They have warded everywhere of significance and any monsters are identified, picked up and killed very soon after they arrive, so no-one has been killed since 1965. She says she knows Sam is a lost cause but she hopes she and her people can work with other Hunters, teaching them to keep America safe, so she wants any and all information on Hunters. Sam says maybe she will tie them to chairs as well – or worse – and he tells her to ‘go to Hell.’ Toni leaves the room and Ms Watt lights an acetylene torch. She goes over to Sam and asks if he really wants her to do this. Sam says, ‘Screw you!’ again, and she brings the torch down to his right foot, inching it over. Sam can’t escape and she puts the torch onto the side of his foot. Sam screams…

…The two demons working for Lucifer are in another house containing more people with blasted eyes. Lucifer calls one of them on the phone. He is supposed to meet the demons there but he won’t as he says they are being followed. They don’t believe it but then Crowley emerges from hiding. He says Lucifer is weak and running, jumping from vessel to vessel since the Darkness attacked him. One demon says no-one will follow Crowley while Lucifer is still around so Crowley says he will kill Lucifer, whereupon both demons laugh. Crowley kills them both. He finds a family photograph and one person in it is not among the dead bodies…

…Dean, Cas and Mary have found the man driving Toni and Sam. Cas attacks him for information…

…Back to Sam, who is unconscious in the basement. His foot is badly burned. Ms Watts put the blowtorch down and thenToni enters. Watts tells her that no-one can take that pain and not break. She says if Toni wants to take it any further she will need Mr. Ketch. Toni rejects that idea as she says she doesn’t want that psychopath near her – ironic considering hers and Watts’ treatment of Sam – but she says they will break his mind instead as she plays with a hypodermic.

…Mary is at a café, watching the children play with computers and technology she could never have imagined. Cas brings her a coffee and says how ‘jarring’ it was for him when he came to Earth and that he understands how difficult it must be for her now. She admits coming back from the dead after thirty years is hard – so much has changed. Dean arrives and says that the plane Toni – ‘evil Elsa’ – flew in on has diplomatic registry so they cannot find out its flight plans. They have found out about the vet who patched Sam up however as his clinic is across the road from the café. Cas tells Dean when he arrives and Dean forces the vet inside with his gun. Under Cas’ threats the vet tells them about taking a bullet out of Sam and being paid $100,000 for his trouble. He tells them that the driver left and another woman joined and then both women left with Sam. Mary knows he is holding something back and tells Cas to ‘hurt him’. Dean is astonished to hear his Mom say this but Cas is convincing and the vet is terrified and tells them that he has her phone number after she called asking about the sedative he gave Sam.

…Sam wakes up in pain on the floor next to the chair but he is no longer shackled to it. His foot has been bandaged but he feels pain in his neck too – there is a puncture wound there. He sees a video camera mounted near the ceiling – Toni and Watts are watching him. Then Toni’s phone rings – it is the vet asking her how Sam is. She suspects something but before she can hang up, Dean comes on the line and tells her she has one chance to hand Sam over. He says he will find her and if anything should happen to Sam, he will tear her apart. She hangs up and tells Watts they have a problem… Dean breaks his phone in frustration and they all leave in the Impala. Meanwhile Sam is limping around, trying to find a way out, when he hears a piercing noise in his ears and he starts to hallucinate: terrible memories of people dying: Dean, Mary and Kevin…

…Back in the Impala, Mary asks Dean what they will do now and Dean says they will go back to the Bunker and put a trace on Toni’s phone. Suddenly the car is sideswiped by another vehicle out of nowhere. Dean and Cas are fine but Mary is unconscious. When they get out, a woman says ‘Dean Winchester, I presume?’ – it is Watts, smirking next to her car…

...Sam is still hallucinating. The high-pitched noise happens again; it seems to cue the visions and he sees Jess burning alive…

…Back to Dean and Watts, who slips brass knuckles on her fingers behind her back. Dean grabs her and tells her to tell him where Sam is but she mocks him and throws him to the floor, taking his gun away in the process, only letting him know she has it when he gets up and tries to draw it. She places the gun on the Impala’s hood, then she attacks Cas and knocks him down too – the brass knuckles may have some power as they make Cas bleed…

…Sam is having a vision of Dean, blaming him, Sam, for his death…

…Watts is fighting Dean, knocking him down again; then Cas, even though he has an angel blade, can’t kill her. She knocks it out of his hand and throws him down too.

…Sam is still hallucinating Dean blaming him for everything, calling him a freak… Sam looks in the mirror and agrees out loud…

…Now Watts brings Dean’s gun over to where Dean and Cas are trying to get up. She starts to monologue about her superiority and makes ready to kill them when suddenly the angel blade is poking out of her chest – Mary has regained consciousness and stabbed her in the back instead.

…Sam breaks the mirror on the bathroom cabinet as he hallucinates Dean telling him he should die. He turns around and cuts his throat with the shard he has pulled off, then he collapses to the floor. Toni rushes downstairs to see what she can do and leans over Sam, who is only faking; he turns and grabs her by the throat. He shows her his cut hand, which he used to fake the blood from his cut throat and tells her she isn’t as good at her job as she thinks. He chokes her to unconsciousness and starts slowly climbing the steps to freedom. However Toni regains consciousness and uses the cattle prod to stop him. She clambers past him and locks the door to the basement, keeping Sam trapped again. He roars his frustration and anger…

…Dean and Cas move Watt’s vehicle off the road and cover it with branches while Mary sits looking at her hands, which killed Watts. Dean comes back and says her phone was last used in Aldrich, MO and that Sam is likely near there. He asks Mary if she is alright and she says, ‘No’. She tells him she spent her whole life running from Hunting and she never wanted Dean or Sam to be in the Life either. Dean says he understands, that he wouldn’t want his kids Hunting either but that this is his and Sam’s life now and they make a difference, saving people, making the world a better place. Mary seems to accept this but her face is troubled. They head off in Baby…

…The police find another of Lucifer’s short-lived hosts, with blasted eyes. Crowley is in the crowd, looking at the face in the family photo he has; then he leaves…

…In the Impala, Dean looks back at his Mom, who is deep in thought. He wants to say something but decides against it…

…Sam is still sitting on the stairs; he thinks Dean is dead and he is all alone. Toni is watching him on the monitor…

Writer's note:

A good episode, I think, pulling everything together from last Season's Finale. The Boys are separated again - as at the beginning of Season 10 - but it does feel different.

Cas seems more angry, violent - a hangover from Lucifer's possession, maybe?

Mary may add a new dimension to this Season. Why does she have no memory of her time in Heaven or wherever she has been since she died? Is she really herself? Will she try and persuade Dean and Sam to stop Hunting or will she just leave to start a new life alone? Perhaps she will not even want to stay on Earth as she feels so out of place and time here.

Lucifer is free to roam the Earth but now the tables are turned and he is being hunted by Crowley who wants to be King of Hell again...

...And will the London Chapter of the Men of Letters prove to big as big an evil as the monsters they Hunt? (It's comforting to see the British are back to their efficient best, even if they are cast as the villains :)Will Toni end up switching sides?

- Finally, when will Dean catch up with Sam? Will it happen next episode, before he is hurt any more? Will Toni be forced to call the psychopath Mr. Ketch in to torture Sam afresh when Watts doesn't re-appear? So many questions - I can't wait to see them answered! 🙂
