Well, Supernatural manages a new twist with Lucifer in this mid-season finale! He becomes the President of the U.S.A. – POTUS – hence the title of the episode, LOTUS, I assume. - Not only that but this episode features the spawn of Lucifer, but I am getting ahead of myself… The episode opens with a news bulletin playing, talking about the death of Wallace Parker, a famous billionaire and CEO, who has just died. A priest is listening to it and the archbishop tells him to stop and get on with the ‘Lord’s work.’ As the archbishop walks away, we see crosses on the wall turning upside-down and he smiles sardonically, his eyes flashing red...

...We switch to the Winchesters going to visit the corpse of the billionaire. Cas and Crowley are there ahead of them, also acting as agents. There is the usual banter between them. Dean is annoyed at the Duo acting as agents (and possiibly at Cas for teaming up with Crowley in the first place). Sam uncovers the corpse and they see his eyes have been burned out. Crowley comments that Lucifer has upped from jumping randomly into vessels to selecting 'blue-chip' vessels such as CEOs, celebrities and so on, which he says makes Lucifer more dangerous. Cas solemnly agrees with him, earning another comment from Dean...
...Back to the brothers. Sam is searching for more news on Lucifer. He shows Dean an image of the Archbishop of St. Louis, who was a close friend of Wallace Parker, and the archbishop is not wearing his cross...
...Dean and Sam head over to the archbishop's palace. No-one answers the door. They enter a room and find the priest on the floor, dying. He saw the archbishop and the turning crosses and mumbles enough to Dean to make him think they tried to perform an exorcism. The boys continue searching upstairs and find a dead nun and another priest, skewered to a wall. Then they discover the archbishop, dead with his eyes blasted out...
...The scene changes to a man sitting on a bed, praying. He says he wants to heal old wounds, put people on a more spiritual path and he accepts a 'partnership' to guide him - then a white light fills him. Then we see him sitting, talking to another version of himself - the possessor versus the original - and the possessor wants to know the personal details, so he can pass as the original. However, one of his aides walks in and sees the man apparently talking to himself while he looks at his reflection in the window and he hears the man say he needs to convince people he is the President of the United States, which is enough to seal his death and Lucifer's eyes light up red. He has managed to possess his most important vessel yet and there is no partnership, Lucifer is in full control...
...The president is explaining to his aides the next morning how the man died. It appears he died of natural causes and one of them asks him to offer a prayer and hands him a bible. Lucifer is at a loss but he recovers and makes banal comments, while his hand is burning from contact with the bible. No-one appears to notice anything is amiss...
...Sam is telling Cas about Lucifer possessing the archbishop and explaining that his priests must have tried to conduct an exorcism, which of course failed, and Lucifer then massacred everyone. They have no idea where he has gone now...
The scene changes to the Forester Estate,President Jeff's retreat, where the senior aide is briefing him on problems in Belarus and asks him if they should involve the U.N. now. He replies that they could 'nuke 'em' and there is a horrified silence - Lucifer realises his mistake and passes it off as a joke... They finish the meeting and then his senior aide - the woman who gave him the bible - asks to speak to him alone. Next we see them in bed together. Lucifer / Jeff says it could almost have been the first time they have had sex 🙂 The secret affair has been going on for some time and she says she wishes they could be open about it, even get married and have a baby. Lucifer smiles when she says that...
...Meanwhile, Crowley has received surprising information from the person who said the president's aide had died from natural causes - apparently she sold her soul to him.
Dean has powered down the bunker's warding to allow Crowley access, although Sam and Castiel are less than happy to see him, but he arrives with news on who Lucifer is possessing - he shows Dean and Sam a picture of Jefferson Rooney, President of the United States...
...Back at the president's retreat, Lucifer as POTUS briefs Nick, the head of his security detail, and tells him two men - possibly members of a cult - believe he is Satan and want to kill him. He asks Nick to deal with this himself and not go through normal channels to remove the threat to him...
Meanwhile, Dean, Sam and Cas are discussing ways to capture Lucifer so he can be returned to the Cage. Cas says that he cannot be returned in his host's body so they have to find a way to remove him from it and he is so heavily guarded in the retreat or out on his touring schedule that they have no idea how to do it.
...The scene changes to Rowena, who is being dumped by her latest fiance - he is a conman and has found out Rowena has no money so he is leaving her for an heiress! Crowley appears and seeing her distress that someone is conning her instead of the other way around, he chokes her fiance and then makes him explode. Rowena and the wall are covered in blood but she tells him that is the sweetest thing anyone has done for her:)
...Back with the president and his lover, in bed. She tells him she feels something has changed and Lucifer, with a secret smile, agrees that it might have...
In the bunker, Cas is suddenly overwhelmed by hearing voices and his vision becomes blurred. He drops two cups of coffee and shouts out in pain. Dean and Sam arrive, concerned for him. He says that angel radio is full of voices and there has been a massive increase in celestial energy: a nephilim - a creature half angel, half human has come into being. Cas says the power is much greater than that of an ordinary angel so Sam guesses Lucifer is the father. Dean says he didn't even know Lucifer was dating 🙂
...Dean, Sam and Cas are on their way to Indianapolis to capture Lucifer and the as yet unborn nephilim. Sam is talking to Crowley and asks him to see if his contact knows of any girlfriend the president may have. However, The Boys have been spotted and are now being pursued by a dark car, its siren blaring. Dean pulls over. He and Sam get out and show their FBI badges but they are faced by Nick, the president's security chief, and his men. Nick knows they are the Winchesters and after a brief fight, Dean and Sam end up on the wrong side of the guns. Just then, another dark, official-looking car pulls up, with the sound system playing loud music, although no-one appears at first. Then a man holding what may be some type of bazooka gets out. Dean and Sam fall to the floor just before he shoots the security team's car. The security men are down and out from the blast and the stranger tells 'the angel' to wipe their memories. He introduces himself as Arthur Ketch, British Men of Letters (alluded to as a psychopath by the unhinged Lady Bevell)....
....Ketch is talking to The Boys and Castiel. He says he is here to help persuade them to work with the British Men of Letters, to clear monsters from America. He says he has not been following them, just waiting to help them as and when required, and he tells them that Sam called Mick Davies. Sam admits he did, to Dean's displeasure, but said he hung up. Ketch tells them they have many weapons using a combination of technology and magic. He says they are the 'fun part'. Dean asks if he used a grenade launcher on the car and Ketch said he did - Dean is excited, impressed, but Sam isn't. Then it is his turn to get excited when Ketch tells them of a device to destroy large nests of vampires by altering their DNA, making their own blood lethal to them - Sam says, 'Cool!' 🙂 Ketch shows them something looking like a large golden egg, a hyperbolic pulse generator bomb, which he said can drive a possessing demon from a host more reliably than an exorcism. Sam asks if it would work with an angel. Ketch is curious as to what they are up to but Dean says that if he, Ketch, wants them to trust him, he is going to have to trust them first.
...Dean, Sam and Castiel are with Crowley and Rowena at the Plains Motel. Dean has Ketch's pulse bomb to force Lucifer out of the president - he says they are all dead if it doesn't work. Crowley is chosen as the one to fetch Kelly, the president's girlfriend. He teleports to the retreat while Kelly is on the phone to a friend, telling her she is pregnant. Crowley teleports her back to the others and they tell her about Lucifer possessing her lover but she doesn't believe it. They ask if the president / Lucifer knows about the baby and she tells them he is pleased about it; he said it was the first time he has ever created anything. Castiel says the thing she is carrying is unholy and he fetches a bible and puts her hand on top of it. The bible bursts into flame, although she herself is unharmed. She seems to believe them now. Sam says they need her help...
...The president is thinking out loud about pardoning Charles Manson, when his phone rings. It is Kelly and she asks him to meet her. He goes to the Plains Motel with a small security detail. They check inside to make sure that Kelly is the only one there. The others are next door but Cas is hiding in a closet in the room. When one security man opens the doors, Cas puts a finger to his head and tells him that the room is empty and he goes outside and tells the president that it is. He gets out and goes to Kelly's room. When he is inside, she tells him that she cannot have the baby - as she apparently said to him on the phone - and he attacks her, trying to choke her; he says he has to insist she does have it. His eyes flash red and Kelly realises the truth, that he is in fact the Devil.
Sam bursts in and says the spell to activate the bomb. A pulse of energy hits Lucifer in the chest and transfixes him. Rowena casts a spell at Dean's urging, presumably the one to trap and force Lucifer back to the Cage, but Lucifer tells Sam that it isn't over, before a cloud of smoke erupts from him. Rowena continues speaking the spell and Lucifer's essence dives down into a ventilation grating in the floor. The president - now just the president - collapses to the floor. Cas says he is alive but won't remember anything. Kelly goes to be with him but Dean tells Cas to take her away. Cas also carries away the pulse bomb, leaving Dean and Sam alone with the unconscious president. Dean says they have got Lucifer. It's like he doesn't quite believe it, not yet, neither does Sam...
...The president's security people force the door while Dean and Sam are trying to revive the president; meanwhile Cas and Kelly sneak out of the adjoining room. The Boys are arrested for the attempted assassination of the president and taken outside in handcuffs. They see Nick, the security chief, whose mind was wiped by Cas. They are put into an armored car and driven off.
Meanwhile, Cas is with Kelly in a diner. She makes the excuse of going to the bathroom but she sneaks out through the kitchen and calls a cab. Cas realises she has been gone too long and goes to the bathroom but she's not there. Kelly calls him and tries to explain to Castiel that she can't get rid of the baby, that she is its mother. Cas says it is not a baby, it is the spawn of evil, but Kelly won't listen. Cas runs out the back but it's way too late - Kelly has already left...
...The episode ends with Dean and Sam chained in leg irons in the truck, speeding along to jail...
But is Luci really gone, or did he manage to avoid the Cage after all?
