The episode opens with Dean and Sam walking into the First Bank of Jericho. They hold it up, put all the staff and customers inside the vault and they make sure the video cameras see them shooting and killing everyone…
Scene changes to a cabin, where Bobby has Chet – a leviathan who attacked Dean and Sam but was put under some sort of binding spell by Don Stark (a witch) – tied up in the basement. Bobby is trying to interrogate him and find out the leviathans’ weaknesses, but nothing is working on him. Dean and Sam enter, and Chet tells them that Edgar, a leviathan whom Dean had thought he’d killed is still alive, that dropping a car on him had no effect – Chet says the leviathans can’t be killed. He tells Dean he was able to track them because he has all their known aliases from Cas’ memories, when the leviathans were inside Cas. Chet also tells them to look at the news…
The news shows the robbery and murder at the bank, and Dean and Sam have been identified; they are now the subject of a manhunt in California. Chet tells them that the leviathans copied them using their DNA, gathered from hair in their shower. Sam says the motive is that the leviathans want to ‘squeeze’ them, to remove the threat they pose, and Dean wants to go after the leviathans head-on. Bobby is against it but he sends them to Frank Deveraux, someone who owes Bobby a favor and can help them…
Dean and Sam are recognized in a convenience store but they escape. Meanwhile two FBI agents, Morris and Valente, are seen at the Manitoc Savings and Loan, which the fake Winchesters have also robbed; these agents are called and told about the real Dean and Sam being spotted at the convenience store 1000 miles away, so they head off in pursuit…
Dean and Sam arrive at Frank’s place and he pulls a gun on them. He realizes they are the robbers on the news but he accepts the idea that they have evil doppelgangers, and when he finds out that Bobby Singer sent them, he agrees to help as Bobby saved his life in Port Huron. Dean asks him to help them ‘disappear’ and he sets them up with new fake IDs as Tom and John Smith and gives them advice on changing their phones regularly, not using credit cards, only cash, and avoiding places with video cameras; oh, and he trashes Sam’s computer, and gives him a new one …
In the meantime, Bobby finds out that Chet can apparently be killed by cutting off his head…
Frank tells Dean to get rid of the Impala as their ‘doublemints’ are driving one too…
Meanwhile, Sheriff Jody Mills (she first appeared in ‘Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid, Season 5, episode 15), appears at Bobby’s cabin; she’s come to thank him for saving her from leviathans when she was in hospital. Bobby finds that Chet has somehow reattached his head, and seems fine; Bobby promptly cuts it off again…
Dean and Sam are now driving in a different car – presumably stolen; the Impala has been left behind and Dean’s not happy at all and there’s a funny, almost cringing moment when Sam catches Dean singing along to an old love song on the radio – twice – and Sam ends up turning the radio off… Then Sam looks at the map Frank gave him, showing where the leviathans committed their crimes and he realizes that they have been hitting towns where Dean and Sam first worked jobs when they teamed up again after Sam left Stanford. They realize the leviathans will go to St. Louis next; Dean’s looking forward to having a burger at Connor’s Diner there …
However, fake Dean and fake Sam are already there, discussing how much they hate The Boys because of Dean’s ‘hero complex’ and Sam’s ‘Lucifer visions’, giving us an insight into how much Sam is really being affected by his hallucinations, even though he appears normal on the outside. They kill everyone there; again making sure it’s all caught on camera …
Bobby tells Sam that cutting the head off a leviathan slows them down! He also tells them that Connor’s Diner has been hit, so they head off to Ankeny, Iowa, the next place the leviathans should go to …
The two FBI agents visit Connor’s Diner and they see the camera video of fake Dean and Sam killing everyone, and they confirm they are off to Iowa …
Chet turns into Bobby’s form after Bobby accidentally touches him, and he talks about Bobby’s problems with his Dad, foreshadowing what is later disclosed in episode 10, ‘Death’s Door’ …
Dean and Sam arrive in Ankeny and see their evil twins drive by in the fake Impala and park opposite. They call Bobby to ask if he has any more ideas on stopping them, but then the police arrive and arrest The Boys. Bobby hears on the phone that Dean and Sam have been arrested, but the leviathans also see this happening …
Meanwhile, Chet taunts Bobby, disclosing that he knows Bobby has feelings for Jody Mills, but then some liquid drops from the ceiling onto his arm; it burns him and he starts screaming. Bobby realizes he may have found something effective against leviathans. He rushes upstairs and sees Jody wiping up something she has spilt on the floor; he runs over and kisses her.
Meanwhile, The Boys are being escorted into the police station, protesting their innocence. Sam is taken to the interview room and Dean to a cell. The leviathans are outside, watching the station. They see two police officers leave and waylay them, then they come back into the station, looking like these officers, and one of them kills and eats one of the other officers …
The Sheriff goes to see Dean, who asks him for his phone call, and he lets him speak with Bobby, who’s managed to deal with Chet at last. Dean tells Bobby they’ve been ’popped’ and that the leviathans are after them now, and. Bobby tells him that sodium borate – Borax (found in cleaning products) – burns leviathans and slows them down enough so they can be decapitated, and then, as long as the head is kept away from the body, they stay ‘dead’. The sheriff ends the call, telling Dean he’s crazy and he walks away, but when he’s close to the main office he sees through the window that one of his officers is eating another officer; then that officer turns into 'Sam', and another one who’s just walked in turns into 'Dean' … He heads straight back to Dean, confused and afraid, and Dean realizes he’s seen the leviathans, so he tells the sheriff to let him out and to go and find as much Borax as possible so they can live!
The next scene switches constantly between Dean and Sam. First it goes to fake Dean looking in on Sam in the interview room. He goes in and tells Sam he’s not his brother, he’s ‘Dean-adjacent’; then the scene switches back to Dean, and fake Sam approaches him. Dean shoots him, to no effect, and fake Sam throws him into a trophy cabinet, leaving Dean on the floor. Then it switches back to Sam again with fake Dean, who tells Sam how much he hates them because they could do anything they wanted to, they could subjugate the weak (humans), but they don’t, they waste their opportunities because they are ‘good’ and look after each other (and help others, although that isn’t stated directly) … Then the scene switches back to Dean, who breaks the fire-glass and takes the hatchet out, and threatens fake Sam, who isn’t concerned by this, but then the Sheriff throws Borax liquid over him and as he is burning, Dean chops his head off … Then back to Sam, but here fake Dean taunts Sam, telling him that Dean thinks he’s nuts, and that’s why he didn’t tell him that he killed Amy… This totally shocks Sam, and fake Dean says that he can eat him now – he ‘likes his meat bitter‘– but then Dean bursts in and throws Borax over him, and as he is burning he chops fake Dean’s head off …Dean doesn’t know what fake Dean said to Sam, nor does he see that Sam is distracted. He asks the Sheriff if he can help them to be ‘dead’ and he agrees, and Dean tells Sam they need to clean up the mess and they leave the interview room…
Later the Sheriff is talking to the two FBI agents, telling them the Winchesters are dead, killed by him, and they’ve already been autopsied and sent to the funeral home for cremation. One of them is angry about this because they wanted to see the bodies for themselves, but the other one placates him and they leave…
Then Bobby is seen saying goodbye to Jody, and she is expecting him to repeat what happened earlier, but he asks her to drop Chet’s head over the bridge and he just kisses her on her cheek. He is obviously thinking about Chet’s words to him that he secretly wants to have a relationship with her and he is suppressing it. Jody seems to understand his reluctance and just smiles as she leaves …
The Sheriff is seen with his daughter, a medical person (?), who is examining the bodies of the leviathans who imitated Dean and Sam. She questions her father’s actions, lying to the FBI, and queries the black ink in the bodies, but then Agent Valente appears. He is a leviathan - probably he was one earlier when he spoke to the Sheriff - and he shows his teeth and kills and maybe eats the Sheriff and his daughter. He examines the bodies of fake Dean and Sam and finds their heads are missing, so he calls Dick Roman, the Head Leviathan, with the news. He tells Dick that Dean and Sam have escaped and the heads of the leviathans are missing and Dick says they will have to rethink the problem – copying Dean and Sam again isn’t an option…
Inside Dick’s car, Crowley appears. He tries to ingratiate himself with Dick, saying he freed the leviathans from Purgatory and they should be friends, but Dick has none of it. He makes it clear he loathes demons and would never work with them, and Crowley disappears.
The final scene shows Dean and Sam together. Dean asks Sam if they should get rid of the leviathans’ heads or keep them, but he realizes there’s a problem with Sam, and he asks him about it. Sam reveals he knows about Dean killing Amy and lying to him about it. Sam is very, very angry and he says he can’t be around Dean anymore, so he tells Dean to go. Dean says he’s sorry, but it makes no difference, and Sam leaves … |
