TEASER:

At the Men of Letters bunker, Lucifer and Chuck are alone and begin talking, but it's hostile and uncomfortable. Lucifer asks Chuck where he's been, and Chuck replies that it's "a long story". Chuck asks how Lucifer feels, after being healed, and Lucifer says he didn't ask for Chuck to heal him. He adds that healing him is simply a "cosmic Band-aid" and changes nothing between them. Lucifer is clearly very angry with Chuck/god.

*

The Winchesters return with groceries and overhear Lucifer reprimanding Chuck. Lucifer says that Chuck has been missing for ages, but as soon as "the apes" (i.e. humanity) call him, he comes to their aid. Chuck denies that assertion, and Dean reminds Lucifer that a human (i.e. Sam) rescued him from Amara. Angry, Lucifer glares at Dean and snaps his fingers, intending to punish him in some way, but nothing happens. Lucifer is not happy to learn that, as a precaution, Chuck has made it so that Lucifer can't hurt the Winchesters.

*

Sam tries to convince Lucifer and Chuck to put aside their differences momentarily to focus on the bigger problem – Amara. Lucifer says that "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and suggests that he is inclined to help Amara instead of helping Chuck and the Winchesters. Lucifer gets in Chuck's face threateningly and utters "screw all of you" before storming out of the room.

EPISODE:

*

Later, we see that Lucifer has locked himself in Sam's room and is playing music very loudly. Dean and Sam are banging on the door, trying to get him to come out and talk to Chuck. He refuses. Later, we see Chuck casually making pancakes. The Winchesters are trying to get him and Lucifer to talk. Chuck says Lucifer wants him to apologize, but he can't because he's not sorry for what he had to do for humanity and for the world. As Chuck sits the plates in front of the Boys, they seem surprised that the pancakes are for them.

*

Some time later, we see that Lucifer has relented. He and Chuck are sitting in chairs across from each other in the MOL library. The Winchesters are trying to counsel them – very awkwardly – to get them to talk. The discussion is tense and awkward; Lucifer maintains that Chuck gave him the Mark and then banished him when the Mark did its inevitable work on him. Chuck maintains that he didn't have a choice – that Lucifer posed too great a threat to humanity to be allowed to remain free. Eventually, after Chuck telepathically sends the Winchesters to another room so he and Lucifer can talk privately, Chuck admits that Lucifer was his favorite, and that he loved him more than anyone else. He gave Lucifer the Mark because he thought his favorite son was strong enough to bear it. But when Chuck saw how HIS decision had destroyed his son, he hated himself for what he'd done, and punished Lucifer for it. Chuck says that he's sorry. Lucifer seems moved.

*

Later, we see Chuck and Lucifer leaving the library together. To Dean and Sam's relief, they seem to have resolved their differences enough to work together. When Sam asks the plan, Chuck says that they should cage Amara again, but not kill her. When Dean questions this, Chuck says that the Darkness has to exist in order for creation to have balance and harmony, so killing the Darkness would not be good. After a brief discussion, it becomes clear that when Amara was caged the first time, it took Chuck and all four archangels. We learn that Michael is in no condition for a fight, and resurrecting Raphael and Gabriel would be very complicated and would take too much time. They discuss ways to replace the missing archangel power they need. They decide to try to recruit Crowley and his demons, the angels in heaven and Rowena for help.

*

Meanwhile, in Crowley's lair, Crowley is trying to convince a small group of demons to help him overthrow Lucifer, returning him to power. He asks the assembled demons to recruit others to support him, in exchange for important positions once he is back in power. But the demons rebuke him disrespectfully, accusing him of making the same promises he always makes. The demons remind Crowley of how Rowena, Dean, and Amara all made a fool of him. They also remind him that – very recently-- Lucifer had him cleaning the floor with his tongue. The demons say there's no point in retaking hell, because unless Crowley has a plan to defeat the Darkness, the world is going to end soon, and hell will end with it. They walk out on Crowley.

*

At the same time, in a small cabin in Grand Isle, Louisiana, a witch (Clea) is sitting at a small table, reading tarot cards. She suddenly looks around the room curiously, sensing Rowena using astral projection to spy on her. She casually invites Rowena inside. Once Rowena is inside,Clea pulls a gun on her and demands to know what she wants. Rowena says she's working a spell that requires the help of another witch. Clea initially chides Rowena for killing some of the other powerful witches who could have helped her. But Rowena reminds Clea that the world is ending (which Clea can tell from her cards) and that the spell she's working on is from the Book of the Damned, and can take them back in time so they can survive the coming apocalypse. Rowena admits that she is afraid; she has come face to face with the Darkness. Although the world has been in peril before, this time, it will also be the end of magic. Clea agrees to help her.

*

To facilitate the plan that Chuck, Lucifer and the Winchesters have developed:

  • Dean goes to Crowley's lair to convince Crowley to help them. He finds Crowley drinking and feeling sorry for himself, but is able to convince Crowley to join them.
  • In heaven, Lucifer tries to get the angels to join the fight, but they despise him too much. Lucifer allows Castiel to show himself. Although the angels also dislike Castiel, Cas is able to convince them that serving as Lucifer's vessel is destroying him, but he is willing to do it to help god save creation from the Darkness.
  • Sam finds Rowena at Clea's cabin, and is able to convince the witches that god is helping them and that they can win. They agree to help.

Back at the bunker, Sam, Dean, Chuck and Lucifer decide on a plan. They agree to use attacks from the angels, demons and witches to weaken Amara. Then, when she's been subdued, Chuck will finish her off. During the complicated discussion that ensues, we learn that Dean wants Chuck to kill Amara, because he fears locking her up won't be permanent; but Dean is conflicted. He understands that the Darkness should not be killed, but he wants Amara dead, although he can't do it himself. Sam convinces Dean that, for once, they have god on their side, so they should do things his way and try to lock Amara up without killing her.

*

Meanwhile, in Lewis, Oklahoma, we see that Amara has found the prophet Donatello and is beating him to get him to reveal Chuck's location. When Donatello, bloody and beaten, refuses to talk, Amara devours his soul and obtains the location of the bunker (and Chuck), anyway. Next, we seethe bunker shaking as if an earthquake is happening. The warding sigils carved into the walls disappear and Amara materializes, standing on the table in the war room. Sam, Dean, Chuck and Lucifer are gone, but Amara walks through the bunker as if searching for them.

*

As this is happening, we see Sam, Dean, Crowley, Lucifer and Chuck meeting at an abandoned power plant to discuss their plan. The atmosphere is understandably hostile, but it seems clear that everyone is on board. Chuck says that he has warded himself against Amara, but as soon as he drops the warding, she'll come for him –expecting a fight. After a brief but acrimonious discussion, they agree that the witches will attack first, followed by the angels and then the demons. Then, when Amara is weakened, Chuck will lock her up. Dean asks about Cas' safety, but Lucifer tells him that Castiel is on board with the plan. Then, Chuck announces that Sam has agreed to bear the Mark of Cain so that Amara can be locked up again. Dean instantly objects, saying he should bear the Mark because he has done it before. Chuck says it can't be Dean because he is already tainted, so it has to be Sam. Dean pulls Sam to the side for a private discussion. Sam insists that this is the only way, and they should follow god's will. Dean tries to get Sam to change his mind, but reluctantly accepts Sam's choice.

*

Back at the bunker, Amara is in Dean's room, looking at a photograph of Dean as a child with Mary, when Rowena uses astral projection to talk to her. Rowena tells Amara that she is with Chuck right now. Rowena walks outside the power plant, and Amara is there. Rowena pretends that she is betraying Chuck by revealing his location, but Amara instantly realizes that Rowena has set a trap for her. Amara says she doesn't care, because all she wants is to confront her brother. Amara implies that she will "repay" Rowena for betraying her. But before she can do anything, Rowena utters a spell and electricity shoots from her hands to strike Amara. We see that, back at Clea's cabin, Clea and three other witches are gathered around a cauldron, chanting and adding additional power to Rowena's attack. Amara is temporarily knocked to the ground, but is able to get up and strike Amara with an electrical blast of her own. Rowena is knocked down, and the four witches gathered around Clea's table in New Orleans are all struck by electricity that shoots out of the cauldron and kills them.

*

At the power plant, Amara walks over to Rowena threateningly, but suddenly the clouds in the sky begin to churn. Amara steps back and opens her arms, smiling as she anticipates the strike from the angels. As she does so, a column of light descends from the clouds and strikes her. Inside the power plant, the ground shakes from the force of the impact. Amara is knocked to her knees again, but before she can get up, tendrils of black demon smoke descend from the sky and swirl around her. She tries to beat them off, but she is lifted off of the ground as the smoke tentacles whirl around her. Amara screams and fights, but is unable to free herself. Next, Crowley walks outside and releases his red demon smoke. It knocks Amara into an abandoned car, and she falls to the ground. Areas of her skin are burned, and she has cuts and gashes on her arms, chest, and face.

*

Dazed, but still walking, Amara bursts through the doors of the power plant. Chuck and the Winchesters are there. Amara approaches Chuck, accusing him of "cheating". Before she can reach Chuck, Lucifer stabs her from behind with one of the spears from his collection of weapons. The spear pierces through her and she looks shocked. Lucifer removes the spear and prepares to finish Amara off with it, but Chuck stops him. Amara is on the ground, bleeding. Chuck apologizes for everything, but Amara says apologies mean nothing after all she has suffered – being locked in the cage for millions of years, alone and afraid. She blames Chuck for everything that happened to her. Chuck says that the world needed to be born, so Amara left him no choice. Amara says the 'real' reason she was banished was that she was his equal, but Chuck created the archangels and other "lesser" beings to make himself large, and so he could feed his ego by being lord over them. Chuck admits that she's telling the truth, but he maintains that it isn't the whole truth. He says the glory of creation is greater than him and his ego. He insists that the greatness of creation didn't come from his hands, but it was there – waiting to be born. He tells Amara that since she's been free, he's sure that she must have experienced and felt some of this greatness. He looks to Dean, implying that Amara's connection to Dean is part of that. Amara says she loved Chuck and that things didn't have to be this way. Then, Amara admits that Chuck has "won, again" and tells him to go ahead and kill her.

*

Chuck tells Amara that he's sorry. As he says this, the Mark of Cain on her chest starts to glow and fade. Simultaneously, Sam grimaces in pain as the Mark is burned onto his arm. Amara screams "NO!", and grabs Chuck by the throat. She says she'd rather die or kill him a million times before she'd return to the cage. Lucifer tries to stab Amara again, but she uses telekinesis to throw him backward into a pillar. As he sinks to the ground, an "energy" that seems to be Lucifer's soul (or perhaps Castiel's -- or both) is ripped from him. Cas' meat suit slumps against the pillar, unconscious. Dean rushes to Cas' aid, but Amara uses telekinesis to throw him against a metal rack. He falls to the ground. Meanwhile, we see that the Mark of Cain on Sam's arm fades as Chuck is dying, and the Mark on Amara's chest is returned to her.

*

Chuck is in mid air, being held there by Amara's power. Dean shouts to Amara "No!", but she ignores him. Tendrils of black smoke leave her body and begin striking Chuck. His body glows white in several places as he's struck repeatedly. Then, his entire body glows white and the Winchesters shield their eyes from the intense light as Chuck falls to the ground.

*

The Winchesters think Chuck is dead, but Amara tells them that he is not dead yet, but will weaken and die soon. She says he will live long enough to watch everything he has created -- and loves -- turn to ash. Outside, it seems to be morning. Rowena regains consciousness, stands up and shields her eyes to look at the sun, which seems to be changing somehow. We can't see what is happening to the sun...yet.
