Dean trying to revive Sam after he sees Hell...

The episode opens with Sam unconscious on the floor after the seizure he suffered at the end of the previous episode – ‘The Unforgiven’. Dean is distraught and tries to wake him. He’s not even sure he’s still alive as he checks Sam’s pulse. ‘Sammy… Come on, damnit!’ he shouts. Sam’s eyes open and there is fire burning in his pupils, but it dies down and Sam is awake… Dean helps him up…

The scene changes to Great Falls Junior College, Paterson, New Jersey…
An anatomy dummy is hanging up in a lab and a janitor is cleaning the floor. His back is turned away from the dummy, whose eyes start to move… As the janitor is mopping the floor, there is a noise. He doesn’t see what caused it but the mannequin has left the hook he was on… As the janitor continues mopping, he sees drops of blood fall to the floor, and we see that a wound has opened up on his forehead. The lights flicker and die and the room temperature drops. The janitor hears a noise and sees the empty hook swinging… He tries to escape but he comes face to face with the mannequin and he screams, then there is the obligatory burst of blood across the screen, and then we see him dead on the floor, with a dissecting knife – or something similar – in his neck. The dummy is back on the hook…

Dean and Sam are outside a food stop. Dean’s just bought some coffee and food for them both. They talk about Sam’s seizure: Dean knows Sam experienced Hell again while he was out of it and tells him, ‘the past stays past; we’re not kickin’ that wall again!’ He says that Sam can’t afford to try and remember what happened while he was ‘a soulless dick-bag’. Dean is insistent: he says that Sam’s life is on the line here and he gets Sam to agree not to try and remember the time when he was soulless… Dean says he has a case to take Sam’s mind off things – it’s the case of the murdered janitor in Paterson…

The scene switches to the lab in Paterson. Dean makes a beeline for the anatomy dummy and starts taking it apart. He pulls the heart out and says to Sam, ‘be my Valentine?’ Sam isn’t amused…Dean’s cell rings and it’s Lisa, but Dean rejects the call. Sam asks him to speak with her but Dean tells him to mind his own business… Sam gets EMF readings from the dummy so they realize something is off here, and Dean spots the surveillance cameras in the room so they go to look at the footage. They view it and find there is interference and a break in the film between the janitor cleaning and when he is dead on the floor…

Dean is in the Impala, waiting for Sam who’s been to see the janitor’s girlfriend, and he receives a text, presumably from Lisa, which he doesn’t look at. Sam comes back and says there was nothing out of the ordinary about the ‘mop-jockey’ and Dean says there’s nothing strange about the land the lab is built on, so they have nothing to go on…

The scene switches to a clothing factory, at night. A security guard is patrolling and he’s in a room full of mannequins. He hears a noise and goes to investigate, and when he turns around he sees a mannequin right in front of him. He thinks it’s a joke but then his breath starts to frost and the same cut appears on his forehead as on the janitor. He’s worried now and he turns around to leave but there’s another mannequin in front of him! Its head turns and it raises a large pair of shears. He falls over and then the other mannequin stabs him with a metal rod of some sort, killing him…

Dean and Sam arrive just as his body is being taken away. Sam finds a bin of dismembered mannequin parts which is giving off lots of EMF and he tells Dean that he thinks it’s to do with the mannequins – the anatomy dummy at the lab and the clothing ones here. Dean thinks he’s joking but realizes he isn’t: ‘so we’ve got a bunch of killer dolls… like Chucky?’ he asks Sam. Sam says if ghosts can possess humans, why not these dolls? However, Dean says ghosts can’t hop over county lines and the factory is three towns away from the lab. They continue to investigate. Dean can’t find any dirt on the security guard but Sam finds a report of a girl, Rose Brown, a seamstress at the factory, who went missing over a year ago. She has a sister, Isobel. Dean says ‘fifty bucks it’s a vengeful spirit’ and Sam asks if he should visit Isobel, which Dean agrees to. Then Dean’s cell rings – it’s Lisa calling again. Sam tells him to answer it: Dean finally agrees. He gets up and walks away…

The call is from Ben, not Lisa. He says something’s wrong with her. She won’t get out of bed and she’s locked herself in her room. Dean tells Ben he’ll phone him back in five minutes… Dean tells Sam he can’t leave now but Sam says he can handle it for twenty-four hours and Dean needs to deal with his past like he did with his. Dean is reluctant – he says how badly it worked out for Sam but he agrees to go and gets in the Impala…

Sam is now talking to Isobel about Rose. She says they were very close and Rose had a big heart but people could be unkind to her because Rose was shy and a little awkward. Sam looks at the photo album Isobel has on the table. He sees photos of the two dead men at the Christmas Party at the factory two years ago. He phones Dean and tells him that he’s found out the janitor worked at the factory but he quit just after Rose disappeared. Dean’s just stopped for a coffee on his way to Lisa’s. He says that something must have happened to Rose around the factory so that’s ground zero, and Sam says he’s off to interview people there…

Sam interviews a few people, but then speaks to a guy, Johnny, who acts very nervous. He says he saw Rose around but didn’t know her. Sam lets him go after giving him his card but he’s suspicious of him …

The scene changes to Dean ringing Lisa’s doorbell, urgently. Lisa answers the door – she’s fine, she’s dressed up to go out and Dean says they’ve been ‘parent-trapped’ by Ben. Lisa asks why and Dean says it’s because she’s going on a date. Lisa invites him in…

A painful conversation with Lisa follows…
Dean is upset about Lisa going out with ‘Doctor Matt’; Lisa says she called Dean six times but he didn’t answer, and Dean says he almost called her back ‘about a hundred’. Lisa isn’t impressed and Dean says he dropped everything to get there when Ben called him and he cares. He asks Lisa what she wants from him and she says she’s not asking him for anything, so he angrily asks her to ask him for something, at which point Ben appears and they both tell him to go to his room; Dean half-smiles at Ben to show him he’s not angry with him. Lisa relents and sits down with Dean and says she can’t ask him for anything. She looks at him and admits, ‘I know what I want but I can’t have it, not the way you live. My phone rings… I think, tiny chance it’s you, big chance it’s Sam calling to say you’re dead.’ Dean is upset and starts to reply but she tells him e doesn’t need to apologize for the way things are; she’s trying to get over him but he keeps coming back, and she asks what he wants from them… Painful emotions flit over Dean’s face but he can’t think what to say for the best…

The scene changes to the warehouse. Johnny is taking to someone on the phone. He says he’s flipping out because of the Feds (Sam) and that Dave and Steve are dead. He finishes his call and blood starts dripping on his hand. He runs to a mirror and sees a cut running across his forehead… His breath starts frosting the air and he turns to see a mannequin near him. Sam appears and grabs him and they run off…

Sam starts laying down salt at the windows and door of a room, for protection. He tells Johnny that a ghost is after him for being a dick! He says that he only followed him because he had the most suspicious interview ever, and that Rose is back! He tells Johnny he has to tell him what happened to Rose if he’s to help him, to stop him being killed like his friends…

Johnny says he and his friends played a ‘stupid joke’ on Rose. They made her think she had a secret admirer, leaving her flowers and chocolates, and they invited her to an apartment. When she got there, someone was sitting at the table, and when she touched him, it turned out to be a dressed up mannequin, which fell off the chair. She turned away and Johnny and his friends came out of hiding, laughing. The janitor, Steve (now dead) said, ‘Look, Rose, I think he likes you!’ Rose was very upset and went to leave, but Steve grabbed her wrist and pulled, and as she pulled away she fell and caught her head on the table and she died. Johnny was calling the police but Steve stopped him, saying the police would charge them with involuntary manslaughter at the least, even if they believed them, so they buried her in an unmarked grave. Johnny said he wished he could take it all back. Sam said he was at least partly to blame but he’d help him. He asked where they buried Rose and Johnny said in the woods, a clearing off Canyon Run Road. Sam told him to wait in the room, inside the salt line…

The scene changes to Dean going into Ben’s room. He tells Ben that his Mom can go out, she’s a grown-up. Ben asks him to come home, but Dean says he can’t. Ben thinks it’s his fault but Dean says it isn’t. He tries to tell Ben he’ll understand when he’s older, but when Ben asks him not to treat him as if he’s six, Dean says, ‘… Just ‘cause you love someone doesn’t mean you should stick around and screw up their life… so I can’t be here’. He tells Ben that his job turns him into someone who can’t sit down at their dinner table, and if he stayed, Ben would end up just like him. He says that without him, Ben has a chance of living whatever life he wants… Ben is unhappy and angry. He says people (him and Lisa) care for him and love him, and Dean is walking out on his family; Dean is very upset, perhaps more than with Lisa, but again he has no answer…

Ben showing his feelings to Dean...

Sam has found Rose’s corpse and torches her bones. He tells Johnny it’s safe now for him to leave…

Dean’s now in the Impala, travelling back to Sam. He relives many past moments with Lisa and Ben on the journey – most happy, but also some of the sad ones from this visit…

The scene changes to Isobel going into an Irish Pub, McOwens, with some friends. Johnny pulls up in a truck and goes into his apartment, which is over the pub. He is talking to his girlfriend, Jenny, who is on the bed, and he sits down there, telling her they need to leave tonight and he loves her, but she’s a mannequin and her head starts to turn…

Johnny is dead on the floor, strangled with the mannequin’s dressing gown cord. Sam arrives and sees the mannequin, and he calls Dean and leaves him a message saying it isn’t over; burning the remains hasn’t worked, Rose is hooked up to something else. He says he is going to see Isobel…

At Isobel’s, Sam is looking through Rose’s effects – there isn’t much – and he sees some chemistry schoolbooks. He asks her about them and she says she goes to Great Falls, where the first man died. Sam asks her if she was at the factory and the chem lab this week, and she says ‘yes’. He then asks if she was at a bar called McOwens last night, and she says ‘yes’ again. Sam realizes that whatever is happening, Isobel is at the centre of it. He asks her what she is wearing of Rose’s. She can’t think of anything, but then she remembers… She says Rose gave her one of her kidneys when she was sixteen. Sam asks her to come with him and they go to meet Dean…

Sam and Dean talk. Sam says they can’t leave the kidney in Isobel because Rose’s spirit will use her connection with Isobel to take revenge on other people. Dean suggests Dr. Robert (Season 6, ‘Appointment in Samarra’) might have a black-market replacement kidney. Sam doesn’t like the idea and suggests using Hoodoo to buy them time while they figure something else out. Dean agrees and suggests they head to Louisiana, but meanwhile Isobel has got out of Sam’s car and hears them talking. She says they’re ‘not Feds’, but then the Impala starts up…Dean’s upset. He says, ’she possesses sex dolls, this is not a sex doll… Hey you leave my Baby alone; she’s got nothing to do with this!’

The Impala accelerates towards them. Dean goes straight ahead and the Impala follows him.

Dean's Baby is possessed and chasing him!

... Sam and Isobel head left to Sam’s car. He leaves her there and heads off to help Dean. The Impala chases Dean round and round... He ends up standing in front of a building, with the Impala screeching towards him. He says, ‘I’m so sorry, Baby!’ and dives out of the way at the last moment, while the Impala crashes into the building and stops…

Sam runs up to Dean, who’s just got up off the floor, and asks if he’s alright. Dean says he’s good and asks if they’re OK. Sam’s fine but Isobel, who’s just behind Sam, starts to say she’s OK but she’s bleeding from the mouth. She has a large piece of glass sticking out of her middle and she falls to the floor, dying. Rose appears and says, ‘I’m sorry, I didn’t mean for this.’ Isobel dies and Rose disappears in flames…

The scene changes to Bobby’s repair yard. Dean is repairing his Baby and Sam comes over with a beer for him. Sam asks how the car is and Dean says she could be worse. Dean’s upset. He asks Sam what they did back there. He tells Sam they ‘saved a few dicks and killed an innocent girl’…and he’s ‘got a heartbroken kid and a woman who’s so pissed at me…’ He says all they do is ‘make a mess.’ Sam says that isn’t true – they do save lives now and again. Dean agrees but says he’s tired of all the bad luck… Sam says that’s part of the job, but he tells Dean it isn’t all bad – ‘Satan’s left the building’ – and he has a soul now, thanks to Dean. He thanks Dean for that, and Dean says Sam would do the same for him… Sam goes on to say they’ll keep their heads down, keep swinging, and they’ll lose some but hopefully win more… He tells Dean, ‘for what it’s worth, I’ve got your back’ and Dean says, ‘I know, and half-smiles at Sam, who returns the smile, briefly.

The episode ends with them standing in front of the Impala’s hood…
