Episode 909
airdate: December 3, 2013
directed by Thomas J. Wright
written by Eugenie Ross-Leming & Brad Buckner
AN ANGEL WAR BEGINS — After a massive angel slaughter occurs, Sam and Dean arrive at the scene to investigate and are surprised to run into Castiel. While investigating, Castiel is captured and tortured. Meanwhile, Dean questions Ezekiel’s demands and wonders if it might be time to tell Sam the truth. |
- Dean - “She was hot."
Cas: “So hot. And very nice. Up to the point she started torturing me."
Dean: “Yeah, well, not every hook-up’s perfect."
- Malachi (to Cas) - “A dupe. The great Castiel, valued and trusted Castiel, top of the Christmas tree Castiel, no more than a dupe.”
- Metatron (to Gadreel) - “Plan B: Rebuild Heaven as the place God envisioned it, only with a hand-picked few. No more anemic functionaries like Bartholomew. And no more stupid angels. Maybe some funny ones.”
- Gadreel (to Metatron) - “Sam Winchester? It is a mess in here. And the brother? I do not know where to start.”
- Kevin - "I always trust you. And I always end up screwed."
Dean - "Oh, come on. Always? Not always."
- Dean (to Sam) - "Those trials really messed you up. I mean messed you up like almost dead. No more birthdays, dust to dust, well, that messed me up so I made a move. A tough move about you without talking it over because you were in a coma.”
- Kevin (to Sam) - "‘Do you notice anything a little bit off about Dean, lately? Between you and me, I’m a little bit worried about him.”

- What will Dean's next move be? Will Cas join forces with him and help him find Sam and force Gadreel to leave his body?
- Can anything be done for Kevin or is he truly dead, forever?
- Can they recover the Angel Tablet?
- What will the angel factions do next?
- What is Metatron's plan?
- And where does Crowley figure in all this?
- Ezekiel isn't Ezekiel! - He's an angel called Gadreel who was imprisoned in Heaven before the angels fell.According to Metatron, Gadreel was imprisoned for allowing the serpent to corrupt Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. Before then, he was god’s must trusted angel. When the angels were expelled from heaven, he was also expelled from prison. When he fell to earth, he took the name of Ezekiel because Ezekiel is considered honorable among the angels
- Metatron initially thought having all the angels expelled from heaven would be good, but it’s lonely. Now, he wants to hand pick which angels can return, and remake heaven to his specifications
- Ezekiel/Gadreel has been eavesdropping on conversations between Dean and Sam
- The war between the angel factions is escalating violently. Malachi, an anarchist, is leading angels against Bartholomew’s followers. Angels are being tortured and killed if they refuse to pledge loyalty to either side
- Kevin is dead! He's been killed by Gadreel!
- Gadreel has refused to leave Sam's body and has joined Metatron as his deputy.
- Metatron plans to "rebuild" Heaven and he'll become its leader, "X", with just a few chosen angels allowed to return.
- Cas has been able to use another angel's grace to become an angel again!
- The term "holy terror" usually describes a child who misbehaves badly
- During the episode's premiere airing, the last part of the end credits were replaced by the last part of the end credits from the preceding episode of "The Originals".
- Dean tells Sam that he’s “not up to warp speed, yet” when trying to explain why he’s having memory lapses. This alludes to the science fiction series and films Star Trek, in which the ships have engines capable of traveling at warp speed, which is extremely fast
- In Hebrew lore, Gadreel is an angel, but he is described as a fallen 'watcher". It's not clear whether he was blamed for directly deceiving or tempting Eve in the garden of Eden, or for allowing the serpent to enter and deceive her, but he is mentioned in the story as having a role in the downfall of man and the introduction of evil into the world
- "This Little Light of Mine" by Harry Dixon Loes (the Melody Ministry Glee Club sings this before entering and after leaving the biker bar)
- "Bad Luck - by Social Distortion (plays in the biker bar before and during the angel fight)
- "Wrong Path" - by Johnny Redmond (plays in Bison Bud's bar while Dean, Sam, and Cas are having beers)
- "Tears in my Beer" - plays in Bison Bud's bar when Dean and Cas are talking
