• Castiel reveals that his true orders were to do whatever Dean told him to. It was a kind of tests, though Cas is not sure whether Dean passed or failed. He also tells Dean there are many more difficult tests ahead.

• Samhain is a holiday in many cultures, derived from the name of a month in the ancient Celtic calendar -- it is not a person, demon, or spirit in any of those cultures.

• Sam says that Samhain is like the Pied Piper. This is a reference to the The Pied Piper of Hamelin, a legend about the abduction of many children from a town in Germany. The town had a rat infestation, and the piper came and lured the rats into the river, where they all drowned.But the town reneged on its payment to him, so he came back and lured away all the children in the village.
