directed by Phil Sgriccia
written by Eric Charmelo & Nicole Snyder

SAM AND DEAN GO UNDERCOVER AT A SPA --- Sam and Dean investigate recent murders where the victims were hundreds of pounds lighter after their deaths. Suspecting witches, the two go undercover at a fancy day spa that all of the victims had attended for weight loss. While Sam is hired as a fitness instructor, Dean takes kitchen duty. After Dean swipes some tainted food and passes out, the guys realize someone is drugging the guests and literally sucking all of the fat out of them until they die.

  • Dean (to Sam and the deputy) - "Known fact: All women lie about their weight and age.”
  • Dean - “These aren’t supplements, they’re roofies."
Sam: - “How do you know what roofies look like?"
Dean - “How do you not know? You think I want to end up in a hotel bathtub with my kidney carved out in Chechnya?"
  • Dean - "I saved your hide back there. And I saved your hide at that church. And the hospital. I may not think things all the way through, but what I do I do because it’s the right thing. I’d do it again.”
Sam - "And that is the problem. You think you’re my savior, my brother the hero, you swoop in and even when you mess up, you think what you’re doing is worth it because you’ve convinced yourself you’re doing more good than bad. But you’re not.”
  • Sam - “What is the upside of me being alive?"
Dean - “Are you kidding me? You and me, fighting the good fight, together."
  • Sam - "Just once be honest with me. You didn’t save me for me. You did it for you. I was ready to die, I was ready. I should have died. But you, you didn’t want to be alone. And that’s what all of this boils down to, you can’t stand the thought of being alone.”
  • Sam - "I’ll give you this much, you are certainly willing to do the sacrificing as long as you’re not the one being hurt.”
  • Dean - “If the situation were reversed and I was dying, you’d do the same thing."
    Sam - "No, Dean, I wouldn’t. Same circumstances, I wouldn’t."

  • Does Sam really believe everything he's said to Dean, or was he just trying to hurt him?
  • How will The Boys repair their relationship? How will they rebuild any trust?
  • Has Crowley found the "first blade" yet?
  • What price will the "Mark of Cain" exact on Dean?
  • Where's Cas? Has he found Metatron?

  • Dean is clearly still hurt by what Sam said about them not being brothers, although he won't admit it
  • Sam tells Dean that if the circumstances were reversed and Dean was the one dying after stopping the Demon Trials, then he, Sam wouldn't have saved him!
  • Sam says to Dean that he does more harm than good, saving him, and he only does it for selfish reasons because he can't stand the thought of being alone.
  • Sam tells Dean he's only willing to do the sacrificing as long as he's not the one being hurt.

  • "Purge" usually refers to getting rid of something. In dieting, "bingeing and purging" refers to an unhealthy cycle of eating (or over-eating) and then vomiting or inducing diarrhea to prevent the body from absorbing the calories from what has been ingested. In the episode's title, purging may also refer to Dean and Sam eliminating some of the toxic feelings that have plagued their relationship
  • Briana Buckmaster, the actress who played Sheriff Hanscum, was approximately7 to 8 months pregnant when this episode was filmed
  • Sam says to Dean "You're not the only one who's ever dated someone bendy", referring to Lisa Braeden, who was a yoga instructor. In the past, Dean commented favorably to Sam about Lisa's "flexibility"
  • Compared to Dean, Sam is generally awkward around women as Dean suggests

  • When the two competitive eaters are arguing, they call each other "Skeletor" and "Jabba". This refers to two fictional characters: Skeletor is a villain from the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe comic book series and cartoons. He is thin and has the face of a skeleton. In start contrast, "Jabba" refers to Jabba the Hutt -- an obese character from the "Star Wars" films. He first appeared in "Star Wars: Return of the Jedi" (1983)
  • Dean says he didn't sleep because he was watching "Rudy" and then "Unforgiven" on television. "Rudy" (1993) is about an underdog who becomes a college football player. "Unforgiven" is a 1992 Western about a man who is hired to exact revenge on a criminal
  • Dean uses the term "tube steak", which means a hot dog. It can also mean pe*is
  • Dean crudely says he'll take "a wh*re's bath", which is a quick wash up of ones privates at a sink
  • A "putsi bag" is a Gypsy charm bag that is normally used for protection or good luck
  • Mala says Wayne used to call her his "Princess Jasmine", a fictional character from Disney's 1992 animated film "Aladdin"
  • Dean references the 1996 horror film "Thinner" (based on a book of the same title written by Stephen King) about a man who is cursed by a Gypsy to lose weight until he dies
  • Sam's fed alias is Agent Frehley, referring to Ace Frehley, lead guitarist from the band Kiss
  • Dean and Sam tell the spa owners that he and Sam are like "Hans and Franz", only less German. Hans and Franz were fictional characters created for skits on the long-running comedy show, Saturday Night Live (1975 - present). The characters are ridiculously muscular and are supposed to exemplify fitness
  • "Roofies" are the street name for the drug rohypnol (also known sadly as the date-rape drug), which causes sedation and memory loss
  • Dean says that he doesn't want to end up in Chechnya.with a kidney missing, referring to the illegal/black market organ trade. There are many urban legends that deal with a person being drugged and later waking up in a foreign country, lying in a tub of ice, with a kidney missing
  • The cook calls Sam "Jack LaLanne", referring to the long-time fitness guru (1914 - 2011) who became famous on television for offering exercise and health advice
  • When Sam is discussing the suction marks, he mentions "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", a science fiction movie about aliens from outer space that come to Earth and copy humans
  • Dean says Maritza "Dysoned" someone to death, and also refers to someone being "Hoovered", both alluding to well known vacuum cleaner brands
  • In South-American mythology, a pishtaco is an evil creature that murders and cannibalizes people, and steals body fat
